I figured this would be of use to some of the adult folk who congregate in this forum, since many in the others think we are taboo.

1. Make one main super site or use a domain.
2. Sign up to sponsors that cater to a niche you understand and enjoy personally.
3. Sign up for Chameleon Submitter (or other submit programs). $24.95 mo.
4. Make new galleries out of the sponsor content provided. Do not use their pre-made. Everyone else is already doing that, and you will not get listed.
5. Submit using Chameleon. Link back to your main super site. Do this 7 days a week to start, eventually maybe back down to 4-5.
6. Arrange all your gal submits on that super site.

Yes. It will take time. So you may want to do 15-30 in advance before submitting to fill up your site. Although you can always mix in some sponsor galleries with your referral code if you like. Keep adding in more of your own daily. Even if only one or two. You drive traffic to your TGP or super site to gain traffic and book markers. Plus hopefully make some conversions.

Organize the submits by niche, sections. Over time you will have a nice super archive of stuff, plus traffic and bookmarkers.

Now that you have a hub, or main traffic stream,.. from there, launch new sites.

The main thing that you NEED TO DO to make it online (IMHO) is you need one site to launch from. For me, it was the celebrity site. Which is why I love the celebrity nice. Steady money, and traffic. I spun off every other site from that one by links, newsletter, and so on. Even if not adult, or foot related.

Having 200 small sites with sh&& traffic are not going to get you making money. I know that we've all thought that, but what you need is one, solid, launch pad site that either has... visitors... or makes money. Obviously, you'd prefer both.

What I did personally was try the various sites, and those I could make money on, I kept. Those that did not make me any real money, traffic, whatever I sold off. I've done that same thing over the years time and again. I may try a new niche, or market. Demo things, see if I can make money and how much. But then I sell it off, and keep those that do. Kinda like leap frogging.

One more thing, to make it online, adult or otherwise, since many do not have money to get rolling, buy super sites, or burn on traffic.... you are simply going to have to invest TIME. If you can't invest time, then you are going to fail, so you had might as well get on to failing right now.

Submitting galleries, link lists, and link building is a pain. Everyone hates it. Yes, everyone would like a short cut. But to 'cut' in this case, you need green (aka cash money). Many I've talked to, and helped have NO GREEN. Some are willing to do what it takes. Others keep talking about 'short cuts', and buying traffic, etc. But it's no surprise they fail.

Again, in IMHO, I would say that if you are just starting out in adult and have no 'hub site'. You should be investing 1-2 hours a day minimum building links, traffic trades, submitting galleries, free sites, and linking them up back to you. It will take you 3-6 months to see any real progress. Around the 9-12 month, if you are doing this every day, you should start to see some results and cash in. DO NOT GET LAZY. Keep going!

Eventually you will be able to leap frog to buy established sites, build your own, try different niches, and networks. But make sure you maintain your main "hub site". The one you launch from. Keep the traffic, UV, sales, whatever strong.

Sell off those things that do not work. You will find over time some sites you like working on, but they take more time, and generate you less money then other sites. Unless it's of personal interest to you. Sell it off.

I get a lot of PM, and ICQ from the board asking me to look at their sites, and give them pointers, and help. Some I have even talked to on the phone. Keep in mind however, a few tips and a few minutes are all I generally give. If you need more detailed help, run a search on here for my consulting help thread.

Yes. There are steps that I am leaving out. Yes, there are many variations to the above on ways to do things. But I am give giving you a few pointers. I am not your online Yoda. But I thought this would be useful to some of my friends in this forum.

How Can You Tell If You Are Getting Any CPM Ads on Your Site?
You can very easily verify whether you are getting any CPM ads on your web site by using functionality built into AdSense's advanced reporting mechanism. Simply follow these instructions:

1. Log into your AdSense account
2. Click on the "Advanced Reports" link under the "Reports" tab
3. For the "Choose product" drop-down, make sure "AdSense for content" is selected
4. For the "Show data by" drop-down, mak sure you select "Individual Ad"
5. Check the box immediately below the "Show data by" drop-down, labeled "Show data by targeting type - contextual or site"
6. Select the Date Range you want to check for
7. Click the "Display Report" button
8. In the report results, you should see a column labeled "Targeting." If you are getting CPM ads, for some (or all) days you will see the word "Site" in this column, with a value in the "Ad Impressions" column. Any days that do not have a "Site" value as well as a "Contextual" value in the "Targeting" column did not get any CPM ads. (Note: "Contextual" in the "Targeting" column refers to the standard cost-per-click ads.)

Using this report, you can see that if you had some CPM.

When talking about email marketing, what comes to your mind? If you are a beginner, you may have both positive and negative opinions towards it. You may think that it is all about spam mails or you may also think that it is something that carries the power to make one rich overnight! And I am sure that you have heard about it in various blogs, forums etc. So, what actually email marketing means? Let’s talk about it from a beginner’s point of view.
What is Email Marketing?

Before going further, I want to make it clear that this article in meant for the beginners, who wants to make money online. If you are a seasoned player in the file of make money online or affiliate marketing, your point of view will be somewhat different and you may skip this article, though I always welcome your constructive feedback.

First, what is email marketing? In simple words, it is the use of the power of electronic mail or email in order to reach a wide range of potential customers or readers when offering products and services. Simply put, it is marketing via email and it is one of the most powerful tools one can have in internet marketing.

SEO techniques - How to use it correctly?

1. The high keyword density style

Not too long ago, the most relevant would have been the web page that contained most instances of the keyword (search term). It didn’t take long for some people to notice that if they filled a page full of that keyword, then that page would be smiled upon by Google. The result was thousands upon thousands of web pages being generated by software that reiterated the same keyword over and over again on a page, the rest of the text being practically nonsense. Here is an example using the keyword knitting:

“Knitting is popular. You can get information on knitting on the internet, and there many sites dealing with the subject of knitting. If you want information on knitting the information superhighway is full of experts on knitting, and there even lots of sites where you can purchase knitting that meets your requirements”

Meaningless, and providing no information whatsoever. The software could change any keyword for knitting, and it would still make the same sense, or lack of it. However, it was great spider food. They loved it, and many people made fortunes on Adsense using such software. However, Google found out and changed the rules. They now use what is commonly called LSI (latent semantic indexing) techniques to judge the relevance of each web page to the keyword.

It is not a true use of LSI, but that’s what it is called, so let’s stick with it. The Google algorithm looks at the keyword and decides what other words would be expected to appear if a human were writing about the topic of the keyword. Hence, for wool, it would be looking for sheep, knitting, knitwear, stitches, etc. If these words do not appear, then your page could be down listed. Nor is it looking for any specific keyword density: 1% could be too high, if it would not be expected to appear that often in normal speech or text.

The algorithm, or spider, looks for other related terms, and if you have your actual keyword as the title of your page in H1 tags, in the headline of your article, say, in H2 tags once in the first 100 characters of the text, and once on the last paragraph, that should be enough. Perhaps once more each 400 words, but no more than that. The 12 occurrences of your keyword if you stuck to 3% keyword density would be considered as keyword stuffing.

If you stick to these guidelines, and use plenty of text related to the keyword you are using, then your page should be regarded as being of value to anybody using your keyword as their search term, and it should be listed high in the search engine index for that keyword.

The reason why search engines no longer need a high keyword density is that they have wizened up to those that tried to take advantage.

2. The anchor text at the bottom of the page SEO technique

Anchor text is the actual linking text on a site. The user clicks on to navigate to that particular site or page with the anchor text. If a search engine finds many links to your site using the term "dog food", then the search engine concludes that your site is about "dog food". This is overlooked quite often, but it seems to have a very large impact on your search engine rankings for a particular keyword. Your anchor text needs to be the keyword or phrase you are trying to target. Try to avoid anchor text such as "Click Here" or "http://www.yoursite.com/".

The way to do:

Put keyword in the form of ALT text.

Put keyword in anchor text of inbound links.

Put keyword in name for your site

Put kenaming your folders and files

Two things to keep in mind. (1) Too many links is not better than just the right amount. Keep it user friendly and readable and I think that’s the balance Google et al. will like. (2) This is especially helpful for long tail keywords, which users are using more and more.

3. The high inbound link to one page SEO technique
Although the shift of weight from On Page Optimization to Off Page Optimization is relatively new, techniques such as inbound linking (particularly one way link building) is not new to web site optimization. The specific art of inbound linking has changed however. In the past, web sites simply amassed as many inbound links as possible from any page. As a web site owner, you may have received various spam email asking if you could link or reciprocate a link to another webpage. Due to the abuse of reciprocal linking for ranking purposes, the art of inbound linking has changed. For example, links from another page to your website should now meet the following criteria:

For optimum web site optimization, the inbound link should come from a page that is related to the content on the page it links to. Sometimes this is referred to LocalRank, a Google patented algorithm that may have been implemented in the notorious Florida Update of 2003. The anchor text used for the inbound link should consist of one or more keywords you have chosen (through keyword research) for the page it links to. The PageRank (Google’s ranking system) of the page linking to you also carries weight – an inbound link from a PR7 page is approximately 10 times better than an inbound link from a page with a PR6. PageRank can be loosely compared to the Richter scale in terms of incremental weight.

4. The Wikipedia attack
Definition: An attack page is a Wikipedia article, page, template, category, redirect or image that exists primarily to disparage its subject

A behemoth with an appetite for embellishing on everyones content through a massive piggy back / content management / internal linking / I’ll take the credit and dominate the SERPs technique. Any keyword it consumes it becomes a ranking juggernaut for, and we are dumb enough to feed it (Argh!) This tactic is also seen on scraper MFA (made for adsense) sites, posturing as the original post, with a unique spin on where the links are directed (tisk, tisk, tisk, come on now, dude - write your own!).
This technique should be avoided and do not use it anymore

5. The old school reciprocal link cover letter and close SEO technique
Reciprocal linking blah blah blah, if your link to me we will rule the web technique, yada, yada, yada - only to have them remove the link one week later and sap your page rank (no thanks). This SEO style may as well join technique #1 as defunct indefinitely.
This blackhat technique should not be used.

6. The Social Profile Image Bait
Link Bait, in simplest terms, merely means creating content that others would want to link to (tell others about) in some way (in a forum, on a blog, a social media site and so forth). This dual citizenship (of SMM and SEO) makes it all the more an area of interest for the modern web marketer.The true power of a link baiting program is that the links are generally diversified and natural. One of the most important aspects of a well rounded link profile is natural editorial links. When done right, link bait activities can build a very natural link profile which is an essential ingredient in the recipe. But if you just add one stunning photograph, post and wait, your site can not be promoted.

7. The Keyword Stuffing Pipes in the Title SEO technique
Keyword Stuffing | Even more Keywords | Even more Ridiculous Stuffing | Company | Services | City | State | Birth Date | SSN | Address | Location of First Kiss with Girlfriend|, etc. you get the point so stop it already.

8. The hidden .css 1px table with 55 keywords inside SEO technique
- very famous in the UK, but known for trying to migrate to the US. Also known to travel in packs with the comment spam and Google bombing technique…so beware. Google do not like it and you will be fined soon.

9. The h1, h2, h3, h4, h5, h6, bold, italic SEO technique
Enough said…use it don’t abuse it. Use it correctly will help to promote your site. I have already

10. The submit your site to 5000 directories and 3,500 search engines SEO technique:
Search engine now is more intelligent and they no longer to get links from directory. And you can be considered farm link. So get backlink from good site which has high pagerank and have the similiar pagerank.

Make Money Online: Supplemental Results

They’ve been called "the Kiss of Death", "Google Hell", and "Screwed Pages" (Ok, I just made those up), but in any case, Supplemental Results is not where you want your pages to be if you expect traffic from Google.

Let’s see google’s official defination from their webmaster page:

Supplemental sites are part of Google’s auxiliary index. We’re able to place fewer restraints on sites that we crawl for this supplemental index than we do on sites that are crawled for our main index. For example, the number of parameters in a URL might exclude a site from being crawled for inclusion in our main index; however, it could still be crawled and added to our supplemental index.

The index in which a site is included is completely automated; there’s no way for you to select or change the index in which your site appears. Please be assured that the index in which a site is included does not affect its PageRank.

yada yada…."auxilary index"? "fewer restraints"? huh??

Here’s the stuff they aren’t telling you:
Pages from the "regular" index will almost always show up first for any searches. The only time you’ll usually see "supplimental results" is if there’s not many, or any, results in the regular index. What this means, is that if you’re page about "blue widgets" is in the "Supplemental Results" then you’re screwed as far as having your page rank at all (will not show up at all since there’s pleanty of results for "blue widgets" in a google search. Your only chance of rankings a page that’s in the supplimental results is if someone searched for something super specific like "blue widgets in southbend kansas on market street").

Supplemental Results also tend to have old Google Caches…..in other words, once google has sent them to "Google Hell", they tend not to come back….thus you’ll find pages in the Supplemental Results are dated long ago.

Why does google put pages in the Supplemental Results?
I’ve been able to identify 3 main reasons:
1. Duplicate Content - take someone elses content, get sent to Google Hell (Supplemental Results)
2. No Content - create pages with no content (remember the days of directories that would create 1 million pages with only 100 listing?) - empty pages get sent to Google Hell.
3. Orphaned web pages. Pages that no one links to, including yourself.

Now, for the dirt - how to get out.
1. If you stole content - change it.
2. If there’s no content - add some.
3. If it’s orphaned - link to it.

Now, that’s not eneough…remember, once page are sent to the Supplemental Results, they tend not to get revisited. Once you’ve done your changes, submit a google site map and cross your finders.

If that doesn’t work, try publishing them on new URLs.

Make Money Online: Basic SEO

Create good content

You want to rank well in Google, but you need to ask yourself: why should you rank well? It’s more obvious why you want to rank well; you want more visitors, you want to spread the word on something that is important to you, you want to change the world, or maybe you just want to sell something, facing strong online competition. But why should you rank well? In the eyes of Google and others, you’re just another webmaster – but search engines first and foremost cater to the searcher. So you better make sure you deserve to be ranking well in Google for whatever it is you deliver to the searcher. Only if you do can you move on to steps 2 and 3. Here’s how:

Search engines mainly understand text. So you need to make sure you create interesting, in-depth content in the form of text. It won’t hurt to include Flash animations, videos, or lots of images – but it also won’t help the search engine. A good test of whether your text can be seen in search engines is to open the source of your page (right click your site and choose “view source”, or however your browser calls it) and then check if that text appears.
There’s a huge variety of search queries that may later on lead to your site. You better give up early on trying to optimize your content for each of those search terms. A more realistic strategy is to have lots of content on your site. If you sell dog supplies, well then write about dogs, dog food, dog coats, dog coats fashion, tips on putting on dog shoes, and throw in an article or two about dog breeding during Renaissance Italy (and then translate all those articles into as many languages as you can).
Let’s say you sell dog supplies, but your competitor does the same, and she also has lots of content on her site. There’s only one thing that will help you: you need not only to have lots of content, but you need to have original content. Create that special feed-the-dog game on your website. Show off interactive charts on the evolution of dogs. Provide a wallpaper download area for dog lovers. You get the idea – do something original no one else thought of. Being unique means that visitors have a reason to come to your site instead of your competitor’s site.
Creating lots of original content is almost the easy part. What’s much harder, and there’s no short-cut, is to become an authority in your field. It’s possible you already are – great, then I suggest you share your expert knowledge freely with the world. People will like your site more if they get the best tips from you, ideally, those that make a change in their life, however small (maybe you are showing them a more effective way to do something, or you answered one of their questions). If, on the other hand, you’re not already an expert in a given field, I suggest you start a blog – a knowledge and news journal for which you need to research an hour or so every day, learning while writing. Just wait half a year, and you’ll be an expert in you blog’s topic.

2. Make your content accessible

We’re now leaving the field of your expertise – dog supplies, or whatever it is you’re doing! – and move on to the technical part of making your content accessible. This part is technical simply because when search engines access your website, they won’t be seeing things the same way human visitors will. Instead of pictures and text, a search engine bot will see stuff like HTML tags, page titles, links, headers, and lots and lots of words. HTML is no rocket science, but you can also get many things wrong, so if you don’t want to tackle it yourself get someone who will; just make sure a couple of points are respected:

Every page should ideally be doing one thing only (and that one thing well). If you have a page where you sell dog coats, then it should have a header that reads “dog coats” along with a dog coat photo, your dog coat articles for sale, and a description of just what a dog coat is. Furthermore, there should be a (limited) set of links on that page leading to related areas of your site, like a page where all dog supplies are found, a page that describes your company (handing out contact info like your company address and your email address), a page leading back to your homepage, and so on.
Every page title should be unique to your site, and accurately & briefly describe your page’s content. If you sell a blue dog coat on the page, then your page title needs to be anything from “Blue Dog Coat” to “Buy a Blue Dog Coat at BestDogSupplies.com”, but it ought not be “BestDogSupplies.com” or “BestDogSupplies.com coats shoes fashion outdoor indoor dogs cats buy for sale”.</li><li><strong>Use proper markup</strong>, with tags like <h1> and <h2>(headers), <p> (paragraphs), <a> (links) and so on, and make sure it validates as HTML4 Strict or XHTML1 Strict by checking with the “<a href="http://validator.w3.org/">officials</a>”. There’s a multitude of ways to display a header – using an embedded Flash animation, for example – and there’s a multitude ways of displaying links – using dropdown combo-boxes, or JavaScript, to name just two – but steer clear from any of that. Keep the HTML simple, and use JavaScript, Frames, or any of that only where you absolutely must, and use Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) to deliver a page layout.</li><li><strong>Make each page rest on a simple, stable, and quick-loading place.</strong> For example, don’t move your pages to different URLs all the time, don’t create redirects, and don’t use overlong, complicated URLs. Simple & stable pages invite others to bookmark your pages or link to them, and it allows search engines like Google to assign a “trust" value to your page. If your page is about red dog coats, its URL should consequently be something like “BestDogSupplies.com/coats/red/” or “BestDogSupplies.com/products/red-dog-coats.html”.

Following these points takes a bit of trial and error, sometimes. But you don’t need to get it all right at once. Ideally, set-up a CMS (Content Management System) of some kind where you, or your developer, exercise full and direct control over tweaking templates and such. As a litmus test: if adding a new product or article, or adjusting the global headline size, or replacing the footer on all pages turns out to be a major headache, you know you’ve chosen the wrong system.

3. Tell others about your content

There once was a time when people could add lots of keywords to their page to optimize it for search engines. Today’s search engines – luckily for searchers – aren’t that easily fooled. Instead of looking at your site, Google and others mostly look at other sites to determine your site’s trust... specifically by checking the other site’s links to you. And the more trusted your site is, the higher it ranks for a variety of search queries. So how do you get others to link to you? Well, you already got great content (point 1 above), and you made it very accessible so it’s easy to link to (point 2 above). Now what’s left is to get the word out so others may feel inspired to link to you; not out of pity, not because you promise a link in return, and not because you paid them, but because they consider a page of yours just right for their visitors. So...

Get involved offline! Go to conferences, trade shows, and every other place where people might be interested to get to know about your website.
Get involved online! Sign-up for mailing list of your site’s topic, participate in newsgroups and web forums of your topic, look for online directories (like the Open Directory) dealing with sites like yours, contact webmasters and bloggers who maintain sites in your topic area. But don’t just get involved to promote your site, as such selfishness is deemed “spam”. Instead, take time to help others... for example, you may want to offer another site to write an article for them. Just pasting your URL everywhere you go is littering the online world – and you may end up being permanently kicked out of the places in which you littered.
Get involved everywhere else! Maybe there’s a TV show which discusses websites? Well, it won’t hurt if you drop them an email, introducing them to your site. Don’t worry about a page’s meta descriptions, meta keywords and such; your time is better spent creating content
Don’t use tools that automatically submit your site’s URL to directories, search engines and such
Don’t present different content to search engines than you present to users; for example, don’t hide your text to visitors and show it to search engines
Don’t “over-optimize"; relax, if search engines required webmasters to heavily optimize, they’d be doing a very bad job
In general, don’t try to outsmart search engines (unless perhaps you intend to dedicate your life to that task); those maintaining search engines are paid to outsmart webmaster tricks, so in the long run, chances for successful tricks are low

I look at a lot of sites on a daily basis. There are a lot of common problems I see on sites. Some people may have tags set-up improperly or use tags that have no real purpose. 3) Description Tag – The whole point behind this tag is to describe what the “page” is about. Keywords related to the page should be implemented as well. The limit on words should be 20 – 25. I see many website owners stuffing this tag with keywords, or having a description that is entirely too lengthy. Stay within these guidelines and you will be fine.

4) Title tag – This, to me, is the most important tag. This is the first tag the search engine reads. It tells the search engine what the” page” is about. Don’t put your web address here. Do not add your company name in the beginning of this tag either. It should not exceed 60 characters.

5) Content- If you notice, I have been commenting on relevancy to the “page”, not your overall site. Each page has it’s own keywords. Tag the title tag, description and keyword tags. All of these keywords should be the same. Add them to your content as well. Now your page should be fairly well optimized.

Why do sites fall short? Simple, content is not optimized. Search engines are, for the most part, pretty basic. You type in a search term and it retrieves sites containing those terms while also taking a few other factors into account. So, if your site doesn’t have these terms, how will you be found? You won’t. Over do it with keywords and you will experience the same result, but for different reasons. Sometimes reading everything about SEO can be bad. Trying too many tricks, tips or methods is like too many cooks spoiling the soup. In the end they can do more bad than good. These are very basic rules that should be followed by all. In, doubt? Use underscore or hyphen to differentiate Keywords. These keywords are normally targeted upon in deeper level or sub directory level pages.

Keywords based on theme is useful to attract targeted audience therefore they are strongly recommended to be used. Typically, although it is not a hard and fast rule but in theme based keyword we use general keywords in root level and uses specific keyword in directory level.

Overall one can safely say that in keyword targeting one uses a dart board strategy. Wherein the smallest circle attracts your core audience & hence should have theme oriented multiple word keywords. As we move up on the theme (dartboard) the circle ( traffic) tends to get larger & the keywords tends to get simpler( singular) even though they are theme based.

Keywords and keyphrases used in domain names & urls of directory pages is also a factor in Search Engine Optimization (SEO) as well as it helps to inform the targeted audience, about the sites content. Therefore, special care should be exercised in choosing a domain name. All the search engines start reading each web page with its respective domain name.

Having said that, let me add that there is a raging debate amongst the seo community to determine the exact importance of keywords in the domain name. One camp believes that it is hugely important to have keywords in domain whereas the other maintains that brand building domain name is more important than keywords incorporating one.

There is much debate about whether the domain name should include one of your main keywords. I look at it as another little plus in our SEO plan. So if you have a domain name without one of your main keywords you can still use these tips.

We are using our other site www.zipposuperstore.com as an example.

So we have our three popular main keywords for our zippo store:

If you look closely all contain the word “zippo”. This is to make things easy when we look at off page ranking, which we will talk about in future blogs.

First thing we need to look at is the page title. The page title should only include our main keywords. Try not to use too many words as Google will give more weight to each of your keywords and you will rank higher.

Please, the page title should not say, “Welcome to our website”. Also do not use say ” zippo lighters and zippo tricks and zippo collections”. Though the last does contain our keywords it does looka little long.

So we will shorten it by doing this “zippo | zippo lighter tricks | collections. Notice We took out the “ands” and replaced them with a “|”. Also only used “zippo” twice for keyword densitity. When possible always combine your keywords to cut down on the total number of words used in your page title. When google looks at our title it will see all 3 of our keywords.

2. Find your niche.
As i said in first step, this step help you to find what you want. Find the niche that you have knowledge on it. And because you are planning for your business, you have to be patient and slowly. You should avoid some niche which have high competitive like makerting online, make money online... It is much easier to chose less competitive niche and you will succeed with those niche. And this niche must be easy for you to write. That's all.

3. Choose a profitable niche.
How to chose profitable niche? You can use google adword and word trackers. Do some research on Google AdWords and Wordtracker to choose the most profitable niche from among the ones you've chosen. Because you're planning to use AdSense, you want valuable keywords or key phrases, if possible ones that people are paying at least 50 cents per click for on Yahoo! Search Marketing and AdWords. You must find the keyword which people usually search this BEFORE you start building your web site. That's critically important.
You can also see how many people searched for the phrase the previous month. For a number of reasons, this figure is often unreliable and can be grossly exaggerated. That's why I double check results using Wordtracker.
Wordtracker's free trial is fairly limited. Fortunately, they allow you to subscribe cheaply for a day or a week at a time. It's very fast, so you can do an awful lot of keyword research in a day. I use the annual subscription now.
Go to Google's AdWords and find out how much advertisers are willing to pay for the keywords or key phrases you're interested in. You can do that by playing around with Google's free Keyword Tool.
For example, try putting in a keyword or phrase, such as "recipe" and click on "Get More Keywords". Pretend you're willing to pay the maximum per click the tool allows - 100. (It won't work properly if you ignore this.) Over on the right side of the page, make sure that "Cost and position estimates" is selected.
The tool will calculate for you the estimated average CPC (cost per click) for a whole lot of words and phrases. Try entering a different word, say "debt" or "hosting", click on "Re-calculate" and watch how the CPC changes.
You don't HAVE to choose a topic which has expensive keywords. Often topics that have expensive keywords are very competitive. You may do better choosing a less competitive niche with cheaper keywords.
Beware: If you choose certain topics, Google will not allow you to place AdSense ads on your site and you'll miss out on a very lucrative opportunity.
Such topics include gambling, firearms, ammunition, balisongs, butterfly knives, and brass knuckles; beer or alcohol; tobacco or tobacco-related products; and prescription drugs.

If you do that, people are more likely to link to your site.

Unique content on all pages is a must. Try to write as grammatically correct as possibly as well. If you have you ad units arranged well on your site in 3-5 ad placement areas, you should be able to build pages or posts in order to get organic traffic related to the offers you are promoting. As webmasters become less impressed with Google Adsense revenues they are looking more and more for affiliate programs to replace them. Often times, affiliate offers yield better than adsense anyways. When looking for offers I find that CJ's EPC system is a pretty good gauge for how well an affiliate program converts. But you have to keep in mind that the EPC can be skewed if that advertiser has a lot of ppc affiliates which convert well. Inhouse affiliate programs are great because you can work with their affiliate managers and beat them up for a higher payout after you have produced for them. Once you have decided on the affiliate programs you will market you then have to either launch a new site or blog or create a section on your current sites to promote the merchant by name or the products they sell. If you post daily and acquire some inbound link to your sites/blogs you will start to generate some good organic traffic. You are then on your way to affiliate income! Technique to hide affiliate links!

+ It is sometimes necessary to hide, or cloak, your affiliate links to stop people stealing your commission or bypassing the affiliate link and going straight to the main site. Affiliate link hijacking is a big problem, some people will change your affiliate URL to their own before purchasing a product so they themselves get paid the commission giving them a discounted product. This problem is far worse if you are promoting to the affiliate marketers crowd as they can spot an affiliate link from 100 yards away! They will just replace your affiliate ID with their own and "hijack" your commissions.
+ Some people just simply hate the thought that you will make a commission from their purchase and will just cut off your affiliate ID at the end of the URL. If you don't take steps to try and hide your affiliate links from hijackers, then you will carry on losing commissions.
+ So the other advantages to hiding affiliate links are that if people see your link in a post or email, they just won’t click it just because of the affiliate connection, hiding links WILL increase your CTR (Click Through Ratio)

How can we hide affiliate links
1. Use shorter link:
The quickest way to hide your links is to use a company like http://tinyurl.com/ which is free to use and turns links like http://www.YourUglyAffiliateLink.com/?12345 into something like this http://tinyurl.com/35q7rl, however this is only really a quick fix and is better to be used for mailing your opt-in lists, the people who trust you, people who don’t know you can’t tell where that link is going to take them, it could be a porn site for all they know, you will get better click through rates using another method.
IMPORTANT: Some link cloaking techniques may prevent some sites from dropping tracking cookies into your visitors computer which means you may not get credit for that referral. Check all links to make sure they work correctly, if you are still unsure use something like Power Link Generator to be on the safe side.

2. Using a redirect php script
This is an easy technique to implement, all you have to do is create a single php file that includes a small piece of code, so if you are trying to promote www-yourID.merchID.hop.clickbank-net then you way create a blank page called, say, http://discounts.php that just contains the redirect script, so the actual link you promote would be www-yoursite-com/discounts.
Unfortunately this technique does have one drawback, some affiliate merchant links will still be visible in the browser address bar, it works great with clickbank products.

3. Hide your affiliate links using a zero-frame code
This technique has a little more code than above, but it actually frames the site you are promoting.

Again, you will need your own website to use this technique but it’s just as easy to do.

The following code frames the site you are promoting making it look to the visitor as if they are still on your site, in other words, no matter which page they go to on the framed site they will only see your domain in the browser window.

Just add the above line of code to your htaccess file, the /AnyNameYouLike is the directory or page you want to use for redirection, for example, if named it /dog-food your link would look like this http://www.yourdomain/dog-food which would redirect traffic to your affiliate link.

You don’t need to create any pages or directories using this technique, just add the redirection code to your htaccess file.

Google works by tracking incoming links from other pages, but it's not necessarily the quantity as it is the quality. Google assigns each web page a PageRank (click for wiki article).

Basically the PageRank can be 0-10. It is better to have a few links from PR10 sites than a ton from PR0 sites. The PR of incoming links also plays a major role in determining your PR.

Building your PR is very challenging and often people resort to link farms, but this only lasts a while because eventually Google recognizes a link farm for what it is and penalizes its PR.

You best bet is to build a quality site with original work that people will apreciate. It comes down to "if you build it, they will come."

Twitter doesn’t make any sense on the surface:

“Some startup is paying squillions of dollars so that you can broadcast free SMS messages to your friends worldwide?

And people actually sign up to have their mobiles clogged with annoying and mundane text messages of no-more-than 140 characters?

And some venture capitalist actually paid for this to get off the ground?”

It reeks of a type of here-we-go-again - dot-com-boom - this-time-in-Web-2.0-form hysteria - and sounds (on the surface) like some venture capitalist was so eager to jump onto the Web 2.0 phenomenon that he bought the first thing that came through his door.

Or at least this is what I thought when I first heard about Twitter.

“Where’s the value in this?” I asked myself.

But the more I scratch the surface (of the Twitter riddle, not my head), the more potential value I see in it.

Twitter is Growing at an Exponential Rate

Twitter’s membership base was said to be 100,000 strong as of late March, and was doubling every three weeks, according to Technology Review

And if the Unique ID’s of the RSS feeds are anything to go by, then as of earlier tonight (when I checked it out) there were at least 4,177,800 users!

And thousands more sign up every hour!!

This is a growth rate which new Web 2.0 services dream of - They type of massive growth experienced by MySpace and YouTube.

And already fan sites are popping up – like Twitterverse – a mashup which looks at the most commonly used words on Twitter.

As Steve Rubel points out, with these sorts of vital statistics it’s only a matter of time until Twitter gets snapped up.
Twitter’s Value is in its ability to Communicate

From a user’s perspective, the real value of Twitter is in its ability to help you communicate with people.

In that way, it’s just like a blog.

If you’re running an internet business, you probably already know the value of a blog: The more you communicate with people, the more likely it is that they will think of you and want to buy from you.

Twitter is just the same – although it has its own strengths and weaknesses.

On the downside, you can only send messages of up to 140 characters.

On the upside, people can receive your messages straight to their mobile phone – meaning you can access them in their daily lives in places where blogs, e-mail and other web technologies can’t reach.

And Twitter foots the bill for you!

What’s more, people WANT to hear about the mundane stuff that happens in your life.

So what’s in it for Twitter? How does Twitter benefit from all of this?
Twitter’s Value is also in Its Huge Database

But from a business perspective (ie - from Twitter’s point of view) the real value in Twitter is in the size of its database.

SMS marketing companies pay millions to build their databases.

Twitter already has a database of millions of users.

If I had this sort of database, I know what I’d do.

* I’d start collecting demographic data from people (as they signed up, or next time they accessed their account). Age, gender, location – and perhaps some interests;

* I’d then start profiling the database, looking for what people are interested in / what they do. For example, a quick scan of the Twitterverse shows coffee is used often;

* Then, I’d look for companies who wanted to market to these people, by targeting their demographics or certain keywords.

Imagine it - Starbucks sends a broadcast out via Twitter to all users who had ever mentioned the word “coffee”, who lived in an area close to a Starbucks coffee house advertising their latest frappe – and offering people a free upsize if they show this SMS when they order!

Something like:

Try Starbucks new Lychee Frappe: Get yours upsized for free if you show this message when ordering. Today Only At Starbucks.

And you still have characters to spare! ;)

Ever since Ed Dale posed the question on his blog, making money out of Twitter is something I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about and researching.

I plan on talking about more in a few days time (so if you’re not subscribed to my RSS feed, then I recommend you hook yourself up right away).

Here’s just one idea – Woot (the site that sells one thing every day) is using Twitter to let people know about their daily specials – and already they have 2054 people signed up!

Six ways Twitter can make money

A web 2.0-sized boatload of buzz has surrounded Twitter, the addictive service that allows its users to answer one simple question: what are you doing? The service has made appearances in everything from your friend's blog to the New York Times, and everyone seems jazzed about how fun tweeting is. While we're all having a good time, however, its creators, Obvious, keep hinting at how many practical uses they have up their sleeve for Twitter. Even though they haven't revealed any of their cards just yet, the rest of us are left wondering: how is such a seemingly frivolous service going to make money?

As a user who has taken the Twitter pill hook, line and sinker, I've been mulling this question for some time now. I came up with a few strategies, but then I figured: why not run them by the Twitter crew themselves? The least they could say was 'no comment,' but fortunately Evan Williams, one of Obvious and Twitter's founders, responded with a few of his own. Read on for my attempts at making Twitter some money (I'm waiting for my job offer Ev), as well as some choice words and ideas of his own from Evan.

* Twitter Pro - This is one obvious move. Twitter Pro could be a paid service that offers more features, unlimited tweets vs. a 'standard' account that receive a daily/weekly limit. It could also include a mobile phone/Windows Mobile/BlackBerry client with more robust tweeting/following tools that use the web to transmit tweets, avoiding those nasty SMS charges. It could also allow tweeting pics and videos from around the web with a Tumblr-like K.I.S.S. philosophy.
* Merchandise - A while back (though I admittedly can't find a link right now), Evan said merch was a big revenue generator for Blogger, and Twitter has worlds more buzz surrounding it right now. Heck, they even rolled out a small batch of shirts for SXSW, over which users seemed to be pretty excited. As ready as we may be to plunk down some cash for the privilege of using a t-shirt to tell people where we waste most of our time, Ev directly replied to this one: "RE: merchandise - It was, at one time, a noticeable part of Blogger's revenue, but that's when Blogger was just me, scraping by; my guess is it wouldn't make a blip in Twitter's costs today. Unless we figured out how to be a trendy new apparel brand." Sorry everyone, but it sounds like apparel isn't exactly on their list of features to roll out in the next update.
* Twitter for Business a lá Google Apps - Customized, secure software that businesses can run on their own intranet. BlackBerry and WinMo clients are a more apparent option here. Obviously, this could become tremendously useful if Twitter built in some hooks that work like Stikkit and Google Calendar, allowing employees to easily tweet appointments and tasks to a centralized PIM system, and automatically be subscribed to their team's tweets without any extra effort on their part.
* Twitter Forums, ad-supported - Finally, an innovation brought to the aging discussion forum format. Sort of a Twitter approach to Yahoo! Answers, allowing users to post questions and follow threads they're interested in, with the Twitter format forcing everyone to keep things simple and on-topic. Instead of ads, this could also possibly be just for Pro customers. One of the catches here is that Twitter users only see tweets from people they are following. When submitting a question to a Twitter Forum, you would be able to see all replies to the question, even the ones from users you've never met and aren't following.

Evan didn't let me have all the fun with brainstorming, however, and he offered two of his own ideas which I would assume are a good bet the company is working on, since he shared them with this lowly blogger:

Two more-straightforward ideas: 1) Ads on the site. We have a little AdSense on there now, but we haven't really tried. As the traffic grows, some tasteful sponsorships might be sellable. 2) Charging companies who are using it for marketing or other commercial purposes. If an organization finds Twitter to be a valuable communication tool with their customers/constituents/etc -- especially if we're sending lots of SMS's for them, which cost us money -- it seems viable to make an offering around that.

So there you have it: six ways Twitter can make money, two of which are straight from the lion's mouth. Judging from the sheer magnitude of buzz surrounding the recently-incorporated company, I wouldn't be surprised if these six are but a drop in the bucket. There's good news for those who fear change, however: no matter which way Twitter decides to start paying their exponentially growing bandwidth bills, Evan assured me that: "Our top concern when it comes to monetization will be to do so in a way that does not negatively impact users." Good show guys; your users will appreciate being able to spend their time tweeting about how they're spending their time, with the least amount of distraction.

Should we buy "Paid Traffic"? Is it Good or Bad?

I am sure we are all familiar with the term “If it’s too good to be true…it probably is.” in the world of the internet this is usually the case. I am sure that you have all seen ads or e-mails that claim to get you thousands of hits a day. The internet seems to be full of these companies that are promising large amounts of traffic at a fraction of the cost of normal PPC, but is it really worth it?

1. How can those company can bring traffic to your site?
What these companies do really depends on the method they use to get traffic.
+ Methods: Some use browser tool bars, some use spyware programs, some use instant messenger, and some even use viruses.

About toolbar: Have you ever seen a “free toolbar” or some other “free tool” that you install on your computer? That’s them and they are everywhere. Of course not all of these tools are bad but how are you supposed to know which ones are and are not spyware, its simply not possible in most cases. Because of this fact these programs spread across the internet and get hundreds of thousands of users. When user installed it, it may be works as virus/spam, automatically tracked users and browse your website. And of course, user does not know that they visit this website. The result is this traffic is bad. They can not increase sales, clicks on ads ... etc.

Another method is used: pop-up ads, pop-under ads, or even bot traffic. What this means is that if you sign up for a traffic program, your page may now have become spam. Your website would be popping up on thousands of desktops world wide to people who could not care less about your products. With bot traffic, it’s even worse in that the user may not even know they went to a website at all. Their computer automatically visits the site for them, with out them ever knowing.

I know some pop-up program can make your site be considered as spam like pop-under.ru ... You should avoid those traffic.

Now you can see why these paid traffic companies are often a bad idea, and why you should avoid them. The traffic is so cheap that many only need one sale to cover the cost, but so is its quality.

If you really want quality traffic that converts, the only way is to stick to what works. Stick to reputable companies with proven track records and always research a company before you enter into a contract with them. A simple internet search could save you hundreds of dollars and your reputation. It may take more time and cost a little more, but it’s better than the alternatives.

Search Engine Optimization
In the previous chapter, I talked about a number of different ways that you can increase your traffic. Probably the most important method though is to get a high ranking on search engines. That’s free traffic. Again, there are all sorts of books and experts who can help you improve your SEO and win a top spot at a site. I have had experience with a number of strategies that could help you improve your ranking. I’d like to share them with you now.
Robot.txt
The first thing you need to know about indexing your site at search engines is that you control which pages are indexed and which are excluded. You do that with a file called robots.txt.
Robots.txt contains nothing more than a record of which robots should index which pages.
Without going into too much detail, there are two conventions used in a
robots.txt file:
User-agent: [Defines which robots the site is addressing.]
Disallow: [Allows you to list the sites or robots you want to
exclude.]
In general, you’re probably going to use “User-agent: *” to make sure that you’re addressing the robots of every search engine and you’ll probably want include all of your pages (although you might want to exclude your directories: “Disallow: /cgi-bin/”). Robots.txt just allows you to control which robots index which pages. It’s important to have in your directory but it won’t really increase your search engine rankings. Titles, URL’s and links are much more important.

Titles And URL’s
I mentioned back that Metatags just aren’t what they used to be. I also said that it’s important that your titles and URLs contain the most important keywords for each of your pages in order to keep the ads relevant. But those titles and URLs don’t just influence your ads; they also affect your search engine rankings. A page about toy cars called cars.html might have a low ranking when someone looks for information about cars. Change the name to toy_cars.html and you should get a much higher ranking when someone looks for “toy cars”. The more relevant your URL is and the easier it is to read, the better. www.domain.com/page is always an improvement than http://domain.com/page.php?newsid=1234583373. One of the first places you should look when you want to improve your rankings then is your titles and URLs.

Links
The more links you have, the better. And the better the sites that list those links the more they’ll be worth. It’s one thing to swap links and ask for links but it is worth aiming to put
your links on sites that look good and have high rankings. In fact, being listed on a poor site can bring your ranking down.
One of the best places to place links to improve your search engine rankings is on forums. Add a comment and include your URL in your signature. Google’s spiders love forums and review them every week. And because these sites tend have quite high ranking, those posts will do wonders for your listings

Create Gateways
Usually, your links will lead directly to your home page. That’s where you see your site as starting and that’s where you want them to enter. But if the content the user wants to see is on one of the internal pages, there’s no reason for them to have to click around to find it. Fill that page with keywords that relate to the content on that page and it will have its own search engine ranking — and well-targeted ads. So if you have a site about cats and one of your pages was about cat food, it would make sense to put plenty of cat food keywords on the page. That
would get you cat food ads and a high ranking on search engines when someone does a search for “cat food” rather than just people who wanted to know about “cats.”

Automatic Submissions
Submitting your site to all of the search engines from Google and Yahoo! right down to the smallest ones, and optimizing each of your pages for high ranking can be a drag. You also have to keep submitting the site on a regular basis and constantly check your position if you want to keep it. The search engines are always re-indexing and reorganizing. A site that can be in the top spot one week can be a couple of pages over a week later. (Good news if you’re low down, not so good if you’ve spent hours changing your pages to climb the rankings.) That’s why many webmasters simply outsource their SEO so that they can concentrate on content. There are lots of companies that do this. Search Engine Blaster for example, lets you choose from over 600,000 engines but there are plenty of others. Personally, I think that’s a bit of a waste of time. Only Google, Yahoo and MSN are important, in that order.

A reputation for providing quality content, targeted traffic and good value for money to their advertisers. The way to meet these requirements is to provide content that meets their
requirements and goes one step further to add something unique, which other websites might not offer. Before you apply to Google AdSense, make sure you haven't cut corners on the layout and the quality of content. Google is quick to reject websites that are built specifically to attract search spiders or that trick people into clicking AdSense Ads.
To make a sizable income from AdSense, you need unique content, a true commitment to your visitors and focused content — which makes it easy for advertisers to target their audience.
To sum up, here are a few quick Do's and Don'ts before you Apply:

+ Don't build a website that specifically targets search spiders, with nothing unique to offer human visitors.
+ Don't build a website just to make money from AdSense.
The easiest way to produce genuinely interesting content is to produce content that genuinely interests you! But writing about what you enjoy rather than what can help you earn doesn’t mean you should forget about using your content to bring you targeted ads. If you know that there are certain keywords in your topic that are worth more, then you can certainly write about those. You can also make sure that you toss in plenty of keywords and headings to keep those ads targeted.
+ DON'T build a website specifically to target highvalue keywords unless you plan on developing quality content!
Just as it’s a bad idea to create more content simply to create more money, so it’s a mistake to focus on particular keywords to create lots of money! The upshot is that when you’ve created your site, you need to pay attention to search engine optimization. That won’t only win you free traffic, it will also get you more money for the traffic you receive.
+Increase 'Readiness to Buy
Advertisers prefer websites that qualify visitors for the purchase. Allow me to explain with this simple example: A search for "cell phones" can throw up a page about the perils of cell phone radiation, a university professor's treatise about messaging technologies and a buyer's guide that
compares features and prices of top-selling cell phone models. selling then you should be able to increase your CTR. Of course, it’s also Google’s job to make sure that your ads match your content, but if you’re writing about DVD’s it makes sense to produce content that encourages people to buy DVD’s because those are the sort of ads you
know you’re going to be served! If you were writing about homebuying, you can be sure that you’d get ads about mortgages and real estate agents. Put up pages about finding the right
mortgage or how to pick a real estate agent and not only do the ads look even more relevant, they’ll also appear more attractive.
+ Don't cut corners. Watch out for typos, amateurish layouts, malfunctioning links, poor-quality or plagiarized content.
Users expect to reach professional websites. Those are the ones they spend the most time on and pay the most attention to. Those are also the ones that Google rewards the most. It pays to put effort into improving your website. It pays to have a good design and a site that’s attractive and well-maintained.

we mentioned making revenue from blogs. But blogs certainly aren’t the only types of content online or the only types that can use AdSense. In an active Internet Community, users generate most of the content. You cannot completely control the keywords or the topics, which means

Unlike passive surfers who like to explore your website for relevant information, forum members are very focused on their messages and the responses they attract. If your site doesn’t have good content, you’re going to struggle to attract
users and links, and you won’t be able to persuade anyone to come back to your site.
Having the right content then is crucial to having good revenues with AdSense. It’s also crucial to the relationship you have with Google’s indexing mechanism. Remember, Google is a search engine first and foremost. Their purpose is to provide the web user with the best search results for the terms they are seeking. If you are providing quality content, you have a greater likelihood of having your search results come up higher on the page. Fortunately, it’s also easier than ever to fill your site with page after page of sticky content, each of which contains ad units and opportunities to earn revenue. The most obvious way to create content is of course to write it yourself. Pick a subject you like and pour your heart out. If you know everything there
is to know about video games, you could set up a site stuffed with reviews, news and walkthroughs, and write all the articles yourself. Your AdSense units will give you ads related to gaming and as long as they’re positioned properly and look right they should give you more than enough revenue to fund your video gaming habit and then some. The alternative of course is to pay professional writers to write for you. I’ve already mentioned www.elance.com as a good place to find designers but it’s a good place to find writers too. You can also ask ConstantConversions.com to write articles for you. The advantage of hiring writers of course, is that you can be sure you’re getting good content with little effort. On the other hand, you have to make that money back. Try testing a writer to see how much profit a series of articles generates. If you pay $200 for five articles but find that your new pages don’t give you a $200 increase in revenues, you either need a new idea — or a new writer.

+ Automated Content
Finally, a couple more options you can use to create content for your website are ArticleBot and TrafficEqualizer. Both these tools automatically create pages filled with content based on your
keywords, saving you the hassle and expense of writing and buying content yourself. The folks at Google aren’t crazy about pre-fabricated, useless content and it’s unlikely your users will be either. They’re probably better than nothing, but good content is best of all.

Catch Fickle Visitors With The Google Search Box
+ Finding Money With Search
What happens when your visitors can't find what they want on your website? They might be bored, probably they're hungry for more or they might want to refine their search. If you have a Google Search Box, you can now retain these 'quitters' — and make money from ads they click from their search results! The Google Search Box isn't just an added convenience for your visitors — it can actually make you money! If your AdSense ads are being ignored, add a link at the bottom of the AdSense ads, inviting visitors to try Google search. A simple note should do the trick. Try something like: "Can't find what you're looking for? Try Google Search!" A Google Search box allows your visitors to specify their exact search terms, thereby "pulling" more relevant ads to your page. Using the Search feature, you can pull up on-demand AdSense ads at the top of the search results.

At the bottom of the Google text ads, place a link to the Google Search bar, inviting readers to Search for better-targeted content and offers. When visitors click an ad, YOU get paid! You can invite users to search within the website or the entire web. As far as possible, use a staid gray button for the Google search feature. It looks more believable — and legitimate! Note that Google has not played around with its own search buttons, although the logo itself has undergone many theme-based transformations.

+ To Search Or Not To Search
Putting a Google search box on your site brings advantages and disadvantages. The big plus is that all the ads the user sees are going to be relevant. The user chooses the keyword so the results are going to be right in line with what the user wants. On the other hand, that means you’ve got no control over the keywords they choose so you can’t try to promote high-paying keywords. You have to take what you’re given. You could have a high click-through rate but low revenues (although there’s still no guarantee that the user will click on an ad rather than an unpaid listing on the search results page.) But your users will leave your site at some point anyway. Why shouldn’t you try to make money when they do click away? Even if Search doesn’t bring you huge amounts of money, you should still use it as an added revenue source and to bring extra functionality to your users. I look at it this way. If a visitor doesn’t find what they want on my site, I’d prefer that they leave some change in the “tip jar” on the way out the door!

+ Home Page Searching
One way to increase your revenues from searching is to encourage your users to use your site as their home page. Many users have Google as their home page. If you’re offering the same service as Google, using their search box and delivering their results, there’s no reason why they shouldn’t be searching from your page — and giving you revenue from the ads. Just encourage your users, especially users with Google as their home page, to switch to you, and you’ll be able to make the most of your search function and your ads.

+ Customizing Your Search
Google lets you customize the search box to match your site in the same way that you can customize your ad units. But a different principle applies here: you want to prevent your ads from looking like ads; you want your search box to look like a search box. You can certainly make the box look like part of your site so that it looks attractive but as I said, keep the button grey. People trust Google to deliver results that they want. If the search box reminds them of Google, they’re more likely to use it than go to Google.com and search from there.

1. How To Maximize Visibility And Response
+ Ad Placement: Where to put your Ads?
Location is everything. The world's best ad won't deliver if it isn't visible in the first place. But after much experimentation with Google AdSense, I know that the most visible ads aren't always the most effective. In fact, they're likely to get ignored as 'blatant advertising'. What does work is wise placement. Put them where your content is most likely to interest and engage your visitors.
You can create several 'points of interest' with the wise use of graphics, tables and other layout techniques. Once you have your visitor's attention with engaging and meaningful content, they are most likely to read and click on relevant ads. And that is precisely what Google wants — "educated" clicks from real prospects, not random visits from bored people. Here are a few simple tips to make your ads 'click'!

+ Go with the 'flow'
Identify the reading patterns of your visitors. What draws their attention first? What makes them 'click'? Like I said, you want to put your ads in areas that draw your visitors in with
interesting content. There’s no point in putting your ads in some out of the way place where no one ever looks. Your users will follow your content, so you need to make sure that your ads
follow that content too. Look at the design and layout of your webpage, identify the places that you think most of your users look — and mark that as a likely spot to put your ads.

Google says that certain areas are more effective than others. Researchers have also found that when people look at a website, their eyes start in the top left hand corner and then travel down the page from left to right. All of this is true but the hottest areas can vary from site to site. You will need to experiment to find the very best places for you.

One general rule on the Internet is that people spend most of their time on a site “above the fold.” The first thing people do when they reach a website is to absorb as much information as possible before they start scrolling. The part of the page that they can see without scrolling is called “above the fold.” That’s where you want your ads. The number of links that appear above the fold affect how likely people are to click on your AdSense ads. That’s why more ads doesn't always mean more money! Google always puts the top-paying ads on the top and the lowest-paying ones at the bottom. If you have a stack with three or more ads, the cheaper ads might steal attention away from high-paying ads and clutter up your website. You don’t want ads and links competing against each other. If you want to increase your earnings per click, remember: Less is More! And that’s particularly true above the fold.

+ Using Tables
I’ve already mentioned that one of the principles of a high click-through rate (CTR) is to make your sites blend into the page. The more you position your sites to blend into the page, the better your click-through rate will be. One very neat way to help your ads blend into the site is to place them in tables.

+ Ad Link Units
So far, I’ve been talking about where to put your ads and I’ve recommended above the fold, with little competition and suggested that you might want to put them in a table. But you should also think about which kinds of ads you want to place where. Ad Link units let you place a box on your site that contains four or five links. They come in sizes ranging from 20 x 90 to 200 x 90, and are really meant to be placed on a sidebar. Because you can place one Ad Link unit as well as three other units on the page, you might find that the choice helps: if a user doesn’t spot something interesting in one type of ad block, he might spot it on another. Where Ad Links differ from other types of ads is that they only display a list of topics that Google believes are relevant to the content of your pages. They don’t display the ads themselves. When a visitor clicks on a topic, Google pops up a new window with targeted ads. It can be argued that the Ad Links are ineffective because people have to go through two clicks in order for you to get paid. That’s right, you only get paid for the second click (but that does mean you can check to see which ads
your users are being served.) But it can also be argued that if someone is taking the time to click on a topic, then they are probably very interested and are likely to click an actual advertisement on the resulting page. Some people have found that just about everyone who clicks on an Ad Link will click on the ads that appear on the next page. I have tested Ad Links on multiple sites and have seen vast differences in results. That makes it more difficult to say whether or not they are for you. In the first case, I placed the Ad Links on an information-based site with a very general audience. The results were nothing to write home about. Let's just say that you could just about buy a large candy bar with the CPM I saw. In the second case, I placed the Ad Links on a product specific site with a narrow audience. The results were fantastic! We're talking about a CPM that is greater than what someone might make flipping burgers in one day. The conclusions should be obvious. If you’re going to use Ad Links units campaign. You need to put them:
1. On a site with a specific field of interest. A general site will give you general ads — and few clicks.
2. Above the fold with few other links. For Ad Links, this is crucial: If your users are going to click a link, it should be a link that gives you money.
It’s also a good idea to keep your Ad Link units for sites with high-paying keywords. If someone comes to your site seeking out information or a product on a top-notch keyword, they tend to be more likely to click as a result.

+Horizontal Ad Link Units
Recently, Google introduced a new format for Ad Link Units: horizontal. This is a huge difference. Users are reporting increases in CTR as high as 200% using this units! Instead of piling the links one on top of the other—which is great for putting above lists of links but stand out too clearly when placed in text—the horizontal ads blend in perfectly when placed on pages with articles.

You can still only use one Ad Link unit per page and users still have to click twice before you get paid but they’re definitely worth slipping into a long article. I’d recommend that you put them either above the article or in the middle. They’ll be too easy to miss at the bottom.

+ Using Multiple Ad Blocks
So Google allows you to put up to three AdSense blocks (ad units) on the same page, as well as an Ad Link unit and a search box. What does this mean for web publishers? A real bonanza: you now have many more chances to hook readers with new ads as Google will show unique ads in each ad unit! To leverage this opportunity, look at adding new content to your high-traffic pages. Use attractive, quick-loading graphics that encourage people to scroll down. For example, relevant, catchy graphics could be a great way to draw your visitors to an ad. A B2B website could run a daily cartoon strip with a humorous take on trade news and issues. Your AdSense ads can be positioned right underneath the cartoon, which will lend instant visibility to the ads.
That’s a strategy that will maximize exposure to the AdSense units, leading to more clicks and more money! With multiple ad blocks, you can decide which ads are served in the best
place for your site.

+ Controlling Your Ads
Attracting Relevant Ads
Getting the color and placement right will help improve your click-through rate. But neither of those will affect which ads your site serves. In theory, Google controls the ads that appear on your site. You don’t get to choose them at all. In practice, there are a few things that you can do stop irrelevant ads from appearing and ensure that you get the ads that give you cash. The more relevant the ads, the greater the chance that a user will click and you’ll earn money. The most important factor is obviously going to be your content. Google’s robot will check your site and serve up ads based on the keywords and the content on your page. Bear in mind that Google’s robot can’t read graphics or Flash or pretty much anything that isn’t text. I’ll talk about content in detail in chapter 8 but for now, remember that if you want to keep your ads relevant, you’ve got to have the sort of page that Google can understand and use to give you the ads you want.
Keep The Title, Directory And Headlines Relevant
How exactly Google’s robot reads pages is a secret guarded about as closely as Coca Cola’s special syrup formula. One thing that does seem to have an effect though is the title of your URLs and files. When you create your pages and view them on your computer before uploading them to the server, you should find that AdSense serves up ads related to the name of the directory that holds the page. That gives a pretty big clue as to at least one of the things that Google is looking at: the name of the directory. Actually, it’s not just the name of the directory that’s important. The name of the file plays a big part too. If you have a website about wedding trains and the title of one of your pages is trains.php for example, there’s a good chance that you’ll get ads about Amtrak and Caltrain. That wouldn’t give you many clicks. Change the name
of the file to weddingtrains.php and there’s a much better chance that you’ll see ads related to weddings. If you find that the ads that are appearing on your site have nothing to do with your content, the first places to look are your directory and your title. Make them more relevant to your content and you should find that you get better ads. Another place to look is your headlines. Instead of using a tag for your heading, try using the <h1> tag with headings that contain your keywords. That should help them to stand out to the robots. And if you don’t have any headlines at all, try adding some.

+ Finding Keywords
We know that Google’s robot searches websites for keywords, then reports back and tells the company what kind of ads to send to the site. If your site is about pension plans for example, then your keywords would be things like “retirement”, “401k” and “pension”. Getting the right keywords on your site won’t just make your ads relevant; it will also help you to make sure that the ads you get are the ones that pay the most. There are all sorts of tools available on the Web that tell you how much people are prepared to pay for keywords. www.overture.com and
www.googlest.com let you see how much people are prepared to pay, and
keywords.clickhereforit.com also has a list of keywords with their prices. Again, you don’t want to build a site just to cash in on a high paying keyword but if you know that “401k” pays more than “retirement” for example, then it makes sense to use the higher paying keywords more than the lower paying ones.

+ Keyword Density
You’ll need the right keywords to get the right ads. But you’ll also need the right amount of keywords. There’s no golden rule for the putting right number of keywords on a page to get the ads you want. You’ll just have to experiment. It also seems to be the case that keyword density is counted across pages, especially for high-paying keywords. If you have a site that's generally about cars and you write a page for car rental, a higher-paying keyword, you might find that you need to produce several pages about car rental before you get the ads. In general though, if you find that your ads are missing the point of your page and that your titles are all correct, then the next step would be to try mentioning your keywords more often and make sure that they’re all finely focused. For example, talking about “fire extinguishers” is likely to get you better results than talking generally about “safety equipment.”

+ Keyword Placement
It shouldn’t really matter where you put your keywords, should it? As long as the right words are on the right page in the right amount of numbers, that should be enough to get you relevant ads, right? Wrong. One of the strangest results that people have had using AdSense is that putting keywords in particular places on the page can have an effect on the ads the site gets.
In my experience, the most important place on your webpage is directly beneath the AdSense box. The keywords you place there could influence your ads.

Keeping that in mind, you could play with your ads in all sorts of ways. If you had a site about camping for example, you might find that you’re getting lots of ads about tents and sleeping bags, which would be fine. But if you also wanted to make sure that one or two of your ads were about Yosemite or mobile homes, then mentioning those keywords once or twice on the page
directly below the AdSense box could give you ads for sites with that sort of content too.
Bear in mind though that you’ll often find that you get ads that try to combine the main thrust of your site with the words in that keyword space below the ad box. So if you had a site about gardening and you mentioned “cabbages” beneath the ad box, you’re more likely to get ads about growing cabbages than ads about cabbage recipes. Experimenting with the placement of the keywords could allow you to control at least one or two of the ads you receive and help keep them varied. That’s definitely something to try.

+ Keyword Frames
One of the reasons that websites don’t always receive relevant ads may be that all the navigation and other non-content words affect the way Google reads the page. If your links and other words take up lots of space, it could well skew your results. One way to avoid your navigation affecting your ads is simply to create frames. You put all of your content in your main frame and the navigation material in a separate frame. Only the “content frame” has the Google code (google_page_url = document.location), so your keywords won’t be diluted by non-relevant words.

+ No 'Baiting'!
Often I've clicked through a 'promising' website, only to find reams of keyword spam, interspersed with AdSense. Websites like these make AdSense look bad. Keyword spam may trick search spiders, but your human visitors will leave disappointed. People hate being 'baited' by a web marketer. Offer content that makes their visit worthwhile. Address the needs and concerns of your visitors with original content. Quality content builds trust and loyalty — and that, in turn, makes people want to click. Search rankings may change, but loyal visitors keep coming back for more!

+ Changing Metatags
Metatags certainly aren’t what they used to be and in AdSense, they’re barely anything at all. There’s a good chance that when it comes to deciding ad relevance, your metatags have no effect whatsoever. I’ve already mentioned that the title of your page will have an effect. It’s also
very likely that the description does too. But that doesn’t mean that your metatags are completely irrelevant when it comes to AdSense. They aren’t. They’re only irrelevant when it comes to serving ads; they still play a role in search engine optimization and getting
your site indexed faster.

+Inviting The Robot
So far in this chapter, I’ve explained some of the ways that you can tweak your page to keep your ads relevant. But the changes you make won’t have any effect until Google’s robot stops by and re-indexes your page. What will generally happen is that once you upload your new page, you’ll still get the old ads and you might have to wait some time before the robot visits it again
and you can find out whether your changes have the right result. To get the robot to stop by earlier, reload the page in your browser, and then again a few minutes later. Do not click on any of the ads just reload and wait a few minutes before attempts. You should find that you receive new ads within a few minutes.

+ Public Service Ads
The penalty for not getting your keyword placement and density right isn’t just irrelevant ads. It could also be no ads at all. If Google can’t find any relevant ads to give you, it could use your space to present public service ads, which are very nice but they don’t pay you a penny. You might prefer to earn money and give it to a charity of your choice rather than give space on
your site to a cause that Google chooses. The most obvious way to beat this problem is to specify an alternate URL in the event that Google has no ads for you. You can do this from your AdSense account. Instead of linking to the Red Cross or whoever it may be, you’ll receive a link to a site that you’ve pre-chosen.

You can also use this space to deliver image-based ads that come from your server. For offers that pay per action (clicks or signups), I like to use WebSponsors.com. You can signup for a free account and find new ways to monetize your unused ad space. You can also use Google Backfill, a very neat service that allows you to select keywords relevant to your site and display targeted ads instead of the public service ads or your alternative URL. They’ll match your colors and styles and split the revenue 50/50. It’s all in line with Google’s TOS and makes good alternative to no revenue at all while you get your keywords fixed. The service is available at www.allfeeds.com

+ Blocking Ads
Finally, the last way to control the ads you see on your site is to block ads you don’t want. Google gives you a limit of 200 URL’s to block, which isn’t much. You might well find yourself burning through them pretty fast, especially if you try to block lower paying ads in favor of the higher-paying ones. Playing with keywords, content and placement will give you much better results.

How To "Tweak" Your Ads To Make Them "Click"!
1. Ad Formats: "Dress" your ads for success!
How would you like your ads served? Banners? Skyscrapers? Rectangles? Squares? What about borders and background colors? The choices can be overwhelming. Many people let Google decide for them preferring to stick with the default settings. Big mistake! From my own experience I can tell you that it's like swapping a hundred-dollar bill for a ten-dollar one.
For almost one year I settled for just a tenth of what I could have been making — just because I didn't bother to control the looks and placement of my AdSense ads. The various ad formats, colors and their placement on the web page can be done in thousands of combinations. You can literally spend hours every day experimenting with every possible combination. But you don't want to, do you? Let me give you a few 'ground rules' that have sky-rocketed the CTR's on my
top-grossing pages:
+ Don't "look" like an ad: People don't visit your website for ads. They want good content. If you make the ads stick out with eye-popping colors, images or borders, that makes them easy to recognize as ads — and people work extra hard to avoid them. The same goes for ads that are tucked away in the top, bottom or some other far corner of the page. So easy to ignore! If you want people to click, make the ads look like an integral part of your content.
Today's visitors are blind to banners, mad at pop-ups, weary of ads and skeptical of contests and giveaways. So how do you win their confidence? Simple. Don't make your ads look like ads!
+ Go for text ads instead of image ads
A text ad offers many advantages over image ads: With the right formatting, a text ad 'blends in' with your site content. An image ad will not give you the same freedom with its appearance, as the only thing you can play with is the size and positioning. You can squeeze more text ads into the space that a conventional banner takes. People love to have more choices! Properly formatted text ads don't look like clutter. Banners do! People hate banners and avoid them at sight. Many tests confirm that people are much more receptive to text ads related with your content.
+ The Best Performing Ad Size
So you’ll want to use text ads and you’ll want them to look like anything but an ad. But you’ll also want them to be a particular size. Which size is that? 336 x 280 – the Large Rectangle. Why should you choose the 336 x 280 ad block? Simple. It gets the most clicks! My studies have shown that this format looks most like real content added to a page. I’ve dabbled with every size Google offers and this is the size that consistently has the best results. Other people have told me the exact same thing. That’s all I need to know! Second best is the 300 x 250 – The Medium Rectangle. This ad block size is really useful when you went to have two sets of ads side by side. They fit on most web pages just perfectly! I would also recommend using the 'wide skyscraper', text-only ads on the right hand edge of the screen — in conjunction with the 3-way matching I
talk about in chapter If you think about it, nearly all PC users are right handed (even left-handed) people like me control their mouse with their right hand because it's how we were 'brought up' to use a mouse.) By placing the ads on the right hand edge it's psychologically 'less distance' between your right hand and the screen. This 'closeness' in my opinion makes the user feel more comfortable and therefore more likely to click through to a link. They feel more in control of their visit experience.
+ Stay away from the 468 x 60 ad block!
One of the first things people do when they sign up for AdSense is to grab a 468 x 60 ad block.
Big mistake. I have a theory about why they do this. It’s the same theory that explains why the 468 x 60 block does not entice clicks. Most site owners have the mindset that when they put Google ads on their site, they must place the code that conforms most to traditional web advertising. And that would be...? Yup, the 468 x 60, the ubiquitous banner format that we have all come to know and love and... IGNORE. Everyone is familiar with the 468 x 60. And that’s exactly why the clickthrough rate on this size is very low, even among advertisers who use
images on their banners. The 468 x 60 blocks screams, "Hey! I am an advertisement! Whatever you do, DON'T click me. In fact, you should run from me as fast as you can!" In all but a few special cases, I have found the 468 x 60 ad block to be completely ineffective, and recommend ignoring it the same way your visitors do.

2. Using Colors To Increase Your Clicks
+ Design your website to Highlight AdSense
I once went to a fashion show where each model wore the exact same black outfit for the entire duration of the show. Boring? Hardly! The show was intended to showcase platinum jewelry, and the outfits were designed to enhance the jewelry — instead of distracting the audience. You don’t have to make all the pages on your website identical (or black). But you do want to make sure that the look of your page draws attention to the ads — and makes them appear as attractive and as valuable as platinum jewelry. Many websites have strong graphic elements that catch the eye — usually at the expense of the AdSense units.

If you're using AdSense, be judicious in the selection of fonts, font size, colors, images, tables and other visual aspects of your website. Draw subtle attention to your AdSense units. Make them the stars of your show!

+Make the border go!
You can more than DOUBLE your click-through's with this one simple tweak! Even before the Internet, ads in newspapers and magazines were marked off with a thick, heavy border. No wonder borders and boxes have come to symbolize advertising messages. Ads with prominent borders make your pages look cluttered. They distract the eye from the ad text, while marking off the ad blocks from the rest of the content.
Google provides an extensive color palette in your administrative area (see above). Use it to tweak the look of your ads to suit your web page. With just one simple click, you can match the color of your ad's border with the background color of your web page. When the border blends with the background, it frees up loads of space. The page looks instantly neater and the ads look more inviting. Make sure you also pick a matching background color for the ad. The ad's background must match the page background on which the ad will appear. If the ad appears in a table, match the table background with the ad background. The key is to blend the background and border color with the page, so that the text looks like an integral part of your web content.
Don't forget to match the background color for your ad with the background color of your web page.

+Text is Design too!
That's right: the text size, font, color and the color of your ads must match the other text elements. If the text color of the ads is the same as the text in the body of your page, it’ll help the ads blend into the site and make the reader feel that you’ve endorsed them. And if the size of the font in the ads is the as the size of the main body of the content, it will have the same effect: they’ll look like part of your site and not something brought in by Google. That’s the sort of blending that translates into clicks. Format your text ads to maximize clicks! I have chosen to use a 728 x 90 leaderboard at the top of my page.

This 3-way matching (titles, text and background) can generate excellent click-through rates.
Too many text styles add clutter and can confuse your visitors. Instead, try every legitimate way to make the ads look like a part of your web content. In other words use the colors to make sure that your ads don't look like ads!

3.Blue Is Best
So you want to get rid of the border. You want to get your ads the same color as the text on the rest of your page and the background matching the background color of your Web page. But what about the link itself, the line the user is actually going to click? What color should that be?
That’s an easy one: blue. I used to say that all the text in the ad should match the text on your page, including the link. After seeing an article about the benefits of keeping the links blue — and testing extensively — I don’t say that any more. The logic is that users have come to expect links on websites to be blue. Just as they expect stop signs to be red and warning signs to be yellow, so they expect their links to blue. That means people are more likely to click on a blue link than a link in any other color. The line in your AdSense code that sets the color of your link is the one that says:
Google_color_link = “#color”;
“#color” is the hexadecimal number for the color you want to use. You should make sure that number is #0000FF. Keep your link blue and you can experience an increase in click-throughs as high as 25 percent!

4. Where did my URL go?

You can change the color of your text and you can make sure that your links scream, “I’m a FREE road to where you want to go!” But you still have to display the URL. It’s one of Google’s rules. But you don’t have to display it in a way that people can see it. One legitimate trick to make the click-through link less obtrusive is to change the URL display color to match the text description color. Now the link will blend in with the text description and the eye will be drawn to the hyperlink instead of the URL. Google provides these tools for you. Why not use them? Note that the 728 x 90 leaderboard and the 468 x 60 banner do not display the url line by Google’s design. It is not a mistake and you will not get in trouble for the url not appearing with these ad blocks. It’s just the way it is.

5.Deliberate Mismatching

When it comes to choosing colors, I recommend 3-way matching and using blue for the links. But there is another strategy that you can use. You can deliberately mismatch your ad colors and styles, provided you keep it to the top of your page. This distinction generates two powerful 'zones' and therefore two types of experience for the visitor. The first zone is always at the top of the first page, above the main site banner. The titles and text colors match colors found in the banner graphic heading. (Important — the URL links are hidden, so only certain text ads will
allow you to do this.) The end result is that these ads, placed above the banner graphic look like
key control points for your site and are just more likely to be clicked. The visitor feels that they are visiting the another major area of that site.

Don't be passive about your AdSense income; work hard to increase it. But before you try out that hot new idea you read about at an Internet Forum, be sure to check out Google's AdSense TOS. Some web publishers have forever relinquished their fat AdSense paychecks, just because they were too busy to pay attention to something so fundamental to their AdSense survival. I like to play by the rules and have taken adequate care to ensure that my AdSense tips and tweaks are legit. Making what I do from AdSense, I have little incentive to go on a rule-breaking spree and get my AdSense account suspended. For many Internet site owners, AdSense is like the goose that lays the golden egg. Take good care of your goose — don't slaughter it in the mad rush to
increase your AdSense income!

Getting started
1. The Basics: Building Your Site

Here’s the facts: to make money with AdSense, you’ve got to have a website. There’s no getting around that. The good news is that it’s never been easier to create a website from scratch and use it to generate real revenue. I’m going to give a brief introduction here to creating a website from the ground up. You can find plenty more information online and I’ll tell you where to look. If you already have a site up and running, you can just skip this bit, head down to 2. and begin reading about how to improve your AdSense revenues.

2. Naming Your Site

The first thing your site will need is a name. That’s easier said than done these days. All the best words in the dictionary have either already been bought and built by developers or they’ve been bought and offered by speculators. But that doesn’t mean you can’t create a good name and buy it for a song. Putting two words together with a hyphen can work (like http://www.make-money-earn-money-online.com) and there are plenty of good names available if you’re prepared to move outside the world of .coms into .net and .biz etc. Your first stop should be to register a domain name and order a hosting plan. One of my favorite sites to do this is Globat. They frequently offer excellent specials, such as free or reduced hosting for a year. Another stop is Network Solutions. This is a nuts and bolts service that lets you hunt and buy names, order hosting plans and even submit your site to the search engines. When you’re looking for a name, you can just toss in ten options and the site will tell you which (if any) are available. All in, buying a name from one of these service won’t cost you more than about $20 a year. If you can’t find a name you like and that hasn’t already been grabbed though, you can take a look at sites like moderndomains.com and bestnames.net. These are companies that buy domain names and sell them for a profit. There’s a good chance you’ll find some good names here but they can cost you anything from $50 to $50,000. Before you part with a penny, think about the advantage that a good name can bring and ask yourself if you can’t get the extra traffic a cheaper way. Often, you can. And remember, twelve years ago no one knew what a Yahoo, ebay or Google was!

3.Choosing A Hosting Service

Your site is going to be stored on a hosting company’s server. (You didn’t want thousands of people dialing into your computer every hour, did you?) Again, there are lots of different options available depending on how much you want to pay and what you need. In general, you’ll want to make sure that you have about 50 megabytes of space (that’s enough for 100 pages!), full statistics reporting and most importantly, 24 hour service. If your site goes down, you’ll be losing money every hour it’s offline. If there’s a problem with the server, you want to make sure it’s fixed right away. You often get what you pay for with Web hosting from “free” services that
will cost you more than you save to $200 a month for dedicated servers. Twenty bucks a month is a reasonable price to pay and Globat and Network Solutions both offer good programs.

4.Designing The Site

It used to be said that absolutely anyone could create a website. That was true: absolutely anyone who knew HTML. Today, you don’t even need to know that. Programs like Microsoft’s FrontPage or NVU (which is free; you can download it at http://www.nvu.com) let you create sites without you needing to know your tags from your tables. If you can use Word, you can
create a website. You can either have fun playing with the programs and designing the site yourself or you can hire a professional designer to do it for you. Freelance site like http://www.elance.com can http://www.guru.com are good places to advertise. You can invite designers to give you quotes and pick the best based on price and talent. Be sure to check feedback and portfolios though; a low bid is often low for a good reason.

5. Creating Content

I talk in detail about building content and optimizing what you write to attract traffic and maximize your AdSense revenues. There are all sorts of ways to do that but for the moment just bear in mind that the ads that appear on your site will depend on the content on your pages. That’s how AdSense works: users click on the ads because they’re relevant. And that’s why it’s not worth putting up a site just to cash in on particular keywords. Google doesn’t like it and neither do users. If your site doesn’t genuinely interest your visitors, you’ll find it hard to get traffic, links and clicks on your ads. But there are still a lot of different ways to create content very easily that improves your income. I’ll tell you all about them in next tut. It’s also worth remembering that Google doesn’t place ads on particular types of sites, so if you’re thinking of building a casino site stuffed with AdSense ads, you can forget about it; it’s not going to happen.
Before you build a site that contains any content that’s remotely controversial, check out the Terms of Service (TOS) to make sure that it’s allowed. It will tell everything you need to know.

6. Search Engine Optimization

Of course, once you’re up, people have to know you’re there. One of the most important ways to do that is get yourself a high-ranking in a search engine. There are lots of different search engines, but only three are really important: Google, Yahoo! and MSN. I’ll talk in more detail
about improving your search engine rankings. If you want to take a shortcut, there are plenty of companies which will make the submissions for you and they’ll even optimize your site to get you as high on the rankings as possible. Submit Express has a free service that you might find useful.

7.Links

Your search engine ranking will depend on a number of factors. One of those factors is the number of sites that link to yours. As far as Google is concerned if lots of sites about model railways link to your model railway site, that must be a pretty good sign that people who like model railways think your site is good. So they’ll want to offer it to people who search for
model railways, bringing you lots of free traffic. Once you’ve got your site up and running you’ll want to persuade other sites to give you links. You could offer to exchange links and you can even set up a page that contains recommended links so that you’ll have somewhere to put them.

8.AdSense — Making The Money!

Once you’ve done all this, you’ll be ready to start using — and profiting from — AdSense. The application process is very simple and straightforward. 9. Google Policies
AdSense works. I know it works because I’ve got the stats, the checks and the bank balance to prove it. Code Modification
You have to paste the AdSense code onto your site as is. And you don’t need to do anything else! Your AdSense account will let you play with colors and placements (and getting those right is what will really rocket your income) so why bother playing with Google’s HTML? It’s not necessary and it could get you a lifetime ban
Incentives
When the ads appear on your page, you have to leave them completely alone. You might be tempted to tell your users to “click here” or support your sponsors but if Google catch you, they could well cut you off. They want people to click because they’re genuinely interested in the ad. Get your strategy right and they’ll do just that. Content Google is pretty picky about where the ads are displayed. They don’t want advertisers complaining to them that their services were being promoted on a site that supports gambling or is filled with profanity or contains more
16 ads than content. If your content doesn’t come up to scratch, you’ll need a site that does.
Prohibited Clicks
And nastiest of all are the people who either click on their own ads or create programs to do it for them. The bottom line is that you don’t need any of this stuff. Maximizing your revenue within the rules is easy!

But they may not add all URLs in your site and index all of them. But we should do it to let google search engine know your site.

To let them know your site, enter your full URL, including the http:// prefix. For example: http://make-money-earn-money-online.blogspot.com. You may also add comments or keywords that describe the content of your page. These are used only for our information and do not affect how your page is indexed or used by Google.

Trying to find good keyword phrases to target is a continual process if you are to succeed with your online marketing, if you don’t do any keyword research at all, then I’m affraid that you will struggle online.

If you’re trying to optimize a page for a popular keyword that has alot of competition, take a close look at the related keyword phrases.

What is Google Penalty?

A penalty is generally a punishment, especially in football(soccer). Google Penalty has the same meaning. You got Google Penalty (punishment) when you violate their rules. For example: One day, you discover that your page rank = 0 or your search engine index is disappeared, you know that you was banned by google search engine.

How to know that you was penalized?
To check for Google penalties with any degree of certainty can be difficult.

1. For example, if your website experiences a sudden reduction in ranking for its main keyword terms it can be caused solely by a Google algorithm change or search results (SERP) update.
Yesterday, you got 1000 unique page view, but today you got only 10.

2. If your web site suffers sudden and dramatic fall in ranking and no Google algorithm changes have been made, then a Google penalty may be the cause, especially if you have been embarking on activities which might have contravened Google's Webmaster Guidelines. The most severe Google penalties lead to total website de-indexing and where the SEO misdemeanour is serious a site ban may be imposed by Google, accompanied by a Page Rank reduction to 0 and a greyed out Google Toolbar Page Rank indication.

Automated query penalty

Google penalties can sometimes be caused by using automated query tools which make use of Google's API, particularly when such queries are made from the same IP address that hosts your website. These tools break Google's terms of service (as laid out in their Webmaster Guidelines). Google allows certain automated queries into its database using its analytic tools and when accessing through a registered Google API account. Unauthorised types of automated query can cause problems, particularly when used excessively.
One of the common automatic queries is site:yourdomain (webmaster usually used it to check their sites). But problem happen when you query so much in short period ==> You will see captchar to authorize. So do not write such queries.

Over optimization penalties
These can be triggered by poor SEO techniques such as aggressive link building using the same keywords in link anchor text. When managing link building campaigns, always vary the link text used and incorporate a variety of different keyword terms. Use a backlink anchor text analyser tool to check backlinks for sufficient keyword spread. Optimising for high paying keywords like "Viagra" can further elevate risk, so mix in some long tail keywords into the equation. For brand new domains, add no more than 5 new one way backlinks a week and use deep linking to website internal pages, rather than just homepage link building.

Website cross linking & link schemes

If you run more than one website and the Google penalty hits all sites at the same time, check the interlinking (cross linking) between those sites. Extensive interlinking of websites, particularly if they are on the same C Class IP address (same ISP) can be viewed as "link schemes" by Google, breaking their terms of service.
The risks are even higher where site A site wide links to site B and site B site wide links back to site A. If you must use site wide links, make sure they are not reciprocal links. Link schemes built around links in the footer of each webpage are particularly risky. The reality is that site wide links do little to increase site visibility in the Google SERPS, nor do they improve Page Rank more than a single link, as Google only counts one link from a site to another. KSL Consulting also believe that Yahoo! now applies a similar policy. There is some evidence that the extensive use of site wide links can lower website Google trust value, which can subsequently reduce ranking.

Hidden text or links
Most people understand hidden text is something like white text on a white background, and know to steer clear of it. Let me show you an example of a hidden link. Normally a hidden link could be in several forms:
- hidden text that also happens to be hyperlinked, e.g. white text on a white background, and the text is a link
- using CSS to make hyperlinks that are tiny, like 1 pixel high text
- hiding links in something like the period in the middle of a paragraph of text

Keyword stuffing (spamming)
Remove excessive keyword stuffing in your website content (unnatural repetitions of the same phrase in body text). Always use natural, well written web copywriting techniques.
Keyword stuffing is considered to be an unethical search engine optimization (SEO) technique. Keyword stuffing occurs when a web page is loaded with keywords in the meta tags or in content. The repetition of words in meta tags may explain why many search engines no longer use these tags.

Keyword stuffing had been used in the past to obtain maximum search engine ranking and visibility for particular phrases. This method is completely outdated and adds no value to rankings today. In particular, Google no longer gives good rankings to pages employing this technique.

Hiding text from the visitor is done in many different ways. Text colored to blend with the background, CSS "Z" positioning to place text "behind" an image — and therefore out of view of the visitor — and CSS absolute positioning to have the text positioned far from the page center are all common techniques. By 2005, many invisible text techniques were easily detected by major search engines.

"Noscript" tags are another way to place hidden content within a page. While they are a valid optimization method for displaying an alternative representation of scripted content, they may be abused, since search engines may index content that is invisible to most visitors.

Inserted text sometimes includes words that are frequently searched (such as "sex"), even if those terms bear little connection to the content of a page, in order to attract traffic to advert-driven pages.

In the past, keyword stuffing was considered to be either a white hat or a black hat tactic, depending on the context of the technique, and the opinion of the person judging it. While a great deal of keyword stuffing was employed to aid in spamdexing, which is of little benefit to the user, keyword stuffing in certain circumstances was not intended to skew results in a deceptive manner. Whether the term carries a pejorative or neutral connotation is dependent on whether the practice is used to pollute the results with pages of little relevance, or to direct traffic to a page of relevance that would have otherwise been de-emphasized due to the search engine's inability to interpret and understand related ideas. This is no longer the case. Search engines now employ themed, related keyword techniques to interpret the intent of the content on a page.

Just place keyword in some major positions. Put keyword in title, url, first paragraph, image file name , alt in tag img, meta description

Link buying or selling
Check for any paid links (I.E. buying text links from known link suppliers / companies). There is some evidence that buying links can hurt rankings and this was implied by comments from Matt Cutts (a Google engineer) on his Google SEO blog. Matt states that Google will also devalue links from companies selling text links, such that they offer zero value to the recipient in terms for improving website rankings or Page Rank. More recently, Google applied a Page Rank penalty to known link sellers and many low quality directories.

Reciprocal link building campaigns
Excessive reciprocal linking may trigger a Google penalty or cause a SERPS filter to be applied when
1. The same or very similar link anchor text is used over and over again
2. Large numbers of reciprocal links are added in a relatively short time.

The dangers are made worse by adding reciprocal links to
+ Low quality sites
+ Websites which have an unrelated theme

So:
+ Avoid reciprocal link
+ Use one way link to similiar theme site
+ Link to quality site

Thin Affiliates and "Made for Adsense" sites
Google dislike those kind of sites. So try to avoid it. Make quality site with original content.

Google Penalty Recovery Strategy
+ Fixing the cause of the problem
+ Waiting for Google to remove any over optimisation penalties or SERPS filters. It takes around 2-3 months after all website problems are corrected.
+ The Google algorithm can automatically remove penalties if the affected website is still Google indexed.
+ To check whether a particular website is still Google indexed, refer to our Google indexing page.
+ If your website has been Google de-indexed and lost Page Rank, then you will need to make a Google re-inclusion request.
+ Follow webmaster guide lines.

+ The best recovery strategy is check your site regularly. Found it ASAP before drop significantly
+ Don't forget to check your link building strategy as poor SEO often causes Google penalties.
+ Removing any reciprocal links to low quality websites, or sites having no relevance to your website theme.

StumbleUpon is a web browser plugin that allows its users to discover and rate webpages, photos, videos, and news articles. These webpages are typically presented when the user -- known within the community as a Stumbler -- clicks the "Stumble!" button on the browser's toolbar. StumbleUpon chooses which new webpage to display based on the user's ratings of previous pages, ratings by his/her friends, and by the ratings of users with similar interests. i.e. it is a recommendation system which uses peer and social networking principles. There is also one-click blogging built in as well. Users can rate, or choose not to rate, any webpage with a thumbs up or thumbs down, and clicking the Stumble button resembles "channel-surfing" the web. Toolbar versions exist for Firefox, Mozilla Application Suite and Internet Explore

Actually StumbleUpon adds bring a lot of traffic, but bounce rate is quite high: about 90% of the visitors just leave the site, and the average time on site is less than 20 seconds.

StumbleUpon is good for building your social networking profile and finding people in your field of interest. They just introduced the a feature you can see which stumbler's profile is close to yours and you can network with them.

In my opinion Social Media does not bring a lot of traffic in a short term.

It is good or bad depending on what your trying to accomplish - Stumble traffic can be GREAT - here's an example:

A software company that I was working for last year created software that would locate your laptop via a secure server every time someone used it to get online - This product could then help the Authorities catch laptop thief's!

We had a Link Bait article written about this... then used stumble traffic @ a $25 a day budget (which is STILL only .05 per click) = AWESOME....

So were we trying to sell software? Not really... we sold some because of the article and the advertising... but that WAS NOT our goal...

Crazy huh, not really link bait is meant to bring you IBL's (In Bound Links)

Since we only spent 8 days in the advertising area (for a grand total of $200 + the cost of my link bait article - mid $xxx.xx) we ended up at the end of our two week test w/ a few hundred new In Bound Links!

Keep in mind... all of those links are gained the CORRECT WAY! (according to Google) and how much would it cost to BUY 200+ links?

So to answer the original question... yeah Stumble is GREAT if you use it the right way

You’ll notice that there’s an if/else statement, and each branch of the conditional statement defines a different ad to display. The results of that conditional statement rely on the outcome of Math.random().

Math.random() generates a random value between 0 and 1. In other words, it gives you a probability. By checking that Math.random() is greater than 0.5, the statement should evaluate to true approximately 50% of the time.

We could also make the rotation more lop-sided. For example (Math.random() > 0.70) would be true 30% of the time. Therefore the first ad would be displayed 30% of the time, while the second ad would be displayed 70% of the time.

ENVELOPE STUFFING SCAMS

Just about every mail order publication has at least one ad in it promising hundreds of dollars a week, just for stuffing envelopes. Some even promise to pay $4 or $5 per envelope stuffed! So, many people send off their hard earned money for the "registration fees" just to discover they have been duped.

Let's take a logical look at this type of scam.

Would you pay someone even 50 cents to stuff an envelope when you can buy an envelope stuffing machine for a few hundred dollars? So, there must be more to what you will have to do than simply stuffing an envelope.

There is more. The most prevalent envelope stuffing scam goes like this. You pay your "registration fee" - usually around $30.00. This "registration fee" is pure profit for the operator.

The operator will then send you a copy of the ad you originally responded to, along with the wording to a classified ad, telling people about how much money they can make stuffing envelopes, and to send a self-addressed stamped envelope for information. When you receive someone's SASE, you send them a copy of the ad.

You have just "stuffed an envelope". If the poor sucker sends in the registration fee to the operator (like YOU did), the operator will send you $1 (or whatever was promised in the ad) for "stuffing the envelope". The operator is left with expenses of around $2 and a profit of $28.

Basically, you are doing all the advertising work for the operator for extremely low pay. You should expect a response rate, if you're lucky, of 0.25% to 0.5%. Even at 0.5%, you would have to get 200 responses to your classified ad to earn $1.

The other most common scam goes like this. You send the usual "registration fee" in, and the operator sends you a package containing all the components of the operators mailings. You must assemble them, fold them, and stuff the envelopes according to the operator's very exact instructions.

Then, you send the stuffed envelopes back to the operator. You will be paid for each stuffed envelope that "meets their standards". Of course, none of the envelopes you stuffed will meet their standards. They will find some reason not to pay you. Of course, that doesn't prevent them from still sending out the envelopes you stuffed...

As you can see, joining an envelope stuffing program is not a good idea. Save your money and put it towards a legitimate mail order business. You will be happier and more successful.

CHAIN LETTERS AND PYRAMID SCHEMES

In case you are not familiar with them, here's an overview, so you know what to watch out for.

Chain letters are those letters you get, instructing you to send, say $5, to the 4 to 6 people on the list, who will send you a report, or some product, or sometimes even nothing. Then, you add your name to the bottom of the list, moving the others up, and the top one off.

You then print and mail out as many as you can, hoping others will do the same as you. The letters are liberally sprinkled with references to how much money you will make, and how many people are sure to participate. Some even go so far as to promise you $1,000,000 and more, sometimes in less than a month!

Pyramid schemes are what chain letters are based on. You buy into one, then you need to recruit others below you, to move you up the line. The people you recruit, in turn, need to recruit others, and so on. Pyramids go by all kinds of names and formats.

For example, a popular pyramid scheme goes like this: There are 8 "level 4," 4 "level 3", 2 " level 2", and 1 "level 1". When you buy in, you pay a predetermined amount, like $10, to the level 1 person. That makes you a level 4.

When you recruit 8 more people, you become a level 3. Your 8 people then need to recruit 8 more, to move you up, and so on. You're promised that you will get hundreds of dollars when you're at level 1.

These programs all share many characteristics.

They are illegal.
Don't believe what the chain letters say, that someone "showed it to the postmaster, who assured him it was legal," or "it's legal, check the postal codes."

Pyramid schemes are illegal because you're paying money for nothing, in a shaky con game which can fall apart if recruiting drops off. With a chain letter, it's the same, but it's conducted through the mail, which opens up mail fraud laws, also.

The mathematics used in the letters and schemes is flawed.
Most chain letters will say you should expect a 5% - 10% response from your mailings. As anyone in mail order will tell you, this is absurd, especially in regard to chain letters.

With a chain letter you are relying on others to do the work that will make money for you. There is no such thing as a free lunch. Somewhere along the line, people will drop out and everybody loses!

It doesn't matter if the chain letter/pyramid involves sending money, recipes, stamps, or any product or object of value. It's still ILLEGAL and a poor business proposition.
MAIL ORDER SCAMS

EXAMPLE 1
Collect names for us. We pay $20 each. Guaranteed! The truth is, this company WILL pay you $20 for each name you collect for them. What they DON'T tell you is that each person has to spend $100 or more by placing an order before you get your $20.

The customer is led to believe that all they have to do is get out their phone books and start sending the company names and addresses. In return, the company will send them $20 for each name and address they send them. When they send away for the details they discover the scam and think everybody in mail order is operating this way. Result: Mail order is labeled as a scam and illegal business activity.

EXAMPLE 2
"How to get 100,000 people to send you $5 each. Send $5 to..." This is cute advertising, but you have to put a legitimate product behind claims like this. One of the materials I found was a book with this title. And you get the book for sending $5 to the publisher. What the you find out is that you are expected to run the same ad in newspapers and tabloids. Other people will send $1 for information and their mailbox is "supposedly" flooded with $1 bills. This ad is NOT illegal. It asks you to send $1 for information and you DO get the information. It's just something you should keep in mind so your expectations aren't high.

These types of ads can be classified under the heading of a "Legitimate Scam." You can't complain that your order was not filled. You can't complain the idea is not possible. You can't complain the ad promised something it didn't deliver.

Likewise, do not confuse scam-sounding ads with legitimate "lead-generating ads". A mail order company may run an ad that states: "Want to make a lot of money? Call 1-800-999-1212". This is NOT necessarily a scam or rip-off. Since there is no cost involved it might be worth your time and effort to call the number and see what is being offered.

Some dealers run ads that don't tell you what the product is because they have an entire package of information they want to send you. It would be too costly to advertise the complete information in a small 1" or 2" ad, so they run "Lead-Generating Ads" to bring them inquiries. This is also not illegal and is common business practice. You will also find that real "Lead-Generating Ads" DON'T ask you for a lot of money up front. They only tell you enough about the product to entice you to send in a SASE (self-addressed stamped envelope) or $1 for more information. They are unlike "Example 2" which basically tells you the scam before you order it!

Instead of complaining, people should be writing their mail order publishers when they are ripped-off, providing them with documentation and a summary of these mail order scams.

Use your common sense! Get your facts straight. Have documentation to back-up your findings and submit them! Wouldn't it be nice if everybody in the world were honest?

MULTI-LEVEL MARKETING PROGRAMS

Multi-level marketing is a fancy name used by some companies in an effort to do two things.

1. To move products from their warehouses, and thus increase their sales volume.

2. To recruit "an army" of commission-only sales people.

After you've stripped all the hoopla away from these "super money-making opportunities", the bottom line remains the same - you make money from commissions allowed from the sale of products.

Generally speaking, very few people have any "real" sales experience, and thus, if offered the opportunity to take a job as a commission-only sales person, they'd run from it. Which is not always best since many companies do provide great support and free training to help you along the way.

Most commission-only sales positions are "direct selling" opportunities.
A lot of personal fortunes have been made by commission-only sales people.
When you sell by mail, you are almost always involved in commission selling, and direct selling.

BEWARE - Most people are "duped" into joining multi-level marketing programs without understanding that it is commission sales and at least a form of door-to-door selling. There are some multi-level marketing companies that subtly encourage you to break the law, and run the risk of huge monetary fines, long terms in prison, or both!

This is done by "inferring" that if you find a certain number of people to duplicate what you're doing, and in turn encourage each person to keep the system going, everybody will get rich!

That's a "Ponzi Scheme"!
A Ponzi Scheme is any kind of money-making opportunity where you get paid by recruiting, enlisting or soliciting other people to follow your lead and continue a chain of events. In other words, you'll be paid a commission from the people you recruit, from the people they recruit, from the people they recruit, and on into infinity.

This is the "secret" that most multi-level marketing companies use to induce you to buy into their program. Such practices are illegal, and subject to federal laws which could destroy you. Bi-level marketing plans are the same thing, as are chain letters, and people-helping people clubs. They are all based upon the Ponzi Scheme. If you have any doubts, take your money-making opportunity and sit down with your local postmaster and discuss it's legality.

These things are illegal because if they really worked, by the time one person had attained level number five, he would have "signed up" everybody on the face of the earth with only the first two levels receiving any of the money. There would be nobody left for the third, fourth and fifth levels to sell to.

Multi-level marketing companies get around the law by stating within their by-laws that it is strictly forbidden to promote or attempt to sell the program by mail. Then, when the postal inspectors come calling on the little guy, the MLM company says: He did it - we don't do such things - here, look at our by-laws.

To make any money selling a product or service on a commission-only basis, you have to have the ability to sell like the well known "used car salesman". It's all hard sell, and more often than not, involves "forcing" the prospect to buy whether it's good for him or not.

Anyone who has ever attempted to succeed in commission sales, knows that it takes a product in great demand - a great deal of sales calls, advertising and persistence - at least a little bit of failure - and a tremendous amount of "total business moxie" to make any money at it.

There is nothing wrong with commission selling. If you're good at it, and receive the proper training and support, you can make a lot of money, but remember that multi-level marketing is commission based. It takes a special kind of personality and a great company to succeed at it.

TELEMARKETING FRAUD

Phone fraud is a multi-billion dollar business that involves selling everything from bad or non-existent investments to the peddling of misrepresented products and services. Everyone who has a phone is a prospect. Becoming a victim is largely up to you.

1. High-pressure sales tactics.

The call may not begin that way, but if the swindler senses you're not going to be an easy sale, he or she may shift to a hard sell. This is in contrast to legitimate businesses, most of which respect an individual's right to be "not interested".

High-pressure sales tactics take a variety of forms but the common denominator is usually a stubborn reluctance to accept "no" as an answer. Some callers may resort to insult and argument, questioning the prospect's intelligence or ability to make a decision, often ending with a warning that "you're going to be very sorry if you don't do such and such". Or, "you'll never get rich if you don't take a chance".

2. Insistence on an immediate decision.

If it's an investment, the caller may say something like, "the market is starting to move even as we speak". For a product or service, the urgency pitch may be that "there are only a few left" or "the offer is about to expire". The bottom line is that swindlers often insist that you must make your decision right now. And they always give a reason why.

3. The offer sounds too good to be true.

The oldest advice around is still the best: "An offer that sounds too good to be true probably is". Be aware that some phone swindlers are becoming more sophisticated and may make statements that sound just reasonable enough (if only barely) to keep you from hanging up. They may make three or four statements you know to be true so that when they spring the big lie on you for what they're selling, you'll be more likely to believe that, too.
4. A request for your credit card number for any purpose other than to make a purchase.

A swindler may ask you for your credit card number. Or, several credit card numbers just for "identification," or "verification" that you have won something, or merely as an "expression of good faith" on your part. Whatever the ploy, once a swindler has your card number it is likely that unauthorized charges will appear on your account.
5. An offer to send someone to your home or office to pick up the money, or some other method such as overnight mail to get your funds more quickly.

This is likely to be part of their "urgency" pitch. It may actually be an effort to avoid mail fraud charges by bypassing postal authorities or simply a way of getting your money before you change your mind.

6. A statement that something is "free," followed by a requirement that you pay for something.

While honest firms may promote free phone offers to attract customers, the difference with swindlers is that you generally have to pay in some way to get whatever it is that's "free." The cost may be labeled as a handling or shipping charge, or as payment for an item in addition to the "prize". Whatever you receive "free", if anything, most likely will be worth much less than what you paid.

7. An investment that's "without risk."

Except for obligations of the U.S. Government, all investments have some degree of risk. If there were any such thing as a risk-free investment with big profits assured, the caller certainly would not have to be calling people in the phone book to find investors!

8. Unwillingness to provide written information or references (such as a bank or names of satisfied customers in your area) that you can contact.

Swindlers generally have a long list of reasons: "There isn't time for that," or "it's a brand new offer and printed material isn't available yet," or "customer references would violate their privacy". Even with references, be cautious, some swindlers actually pay some customers to serve as references.

The caller may also be reluctant to answer questions by phone -- such as inquiries about the firm or even how and where you can contact the firm. The swindler may insist on contacting you "for your convenience".

9. A suggestion that you should make a purchase or investment on the basis of "trust."

Trust should not be given indiscriminately, and certainly not to unknown persons calling on the phone and asking that you send them money. Just the same, "trust me" is a pitch that swindlers sometimes employ when all else fails.

Now we come back to topic: How to avoid it?

1. Don't allow yourself to be pushed into a hurried decision.

No matter what you are told to the contrary, the reality is that at least 99 percent of everything that's a good deal today will still be a good deal a week from now! And the other one percent isn't generally worth the risk you would be taking to find out.

There may be times when you'll want to make a prompt decision, but those occasions shouldn't involve an irrevocable financial commitment to purchase a product or make an investment that you are not familiar with from a caller that you don't know. Also, purchase decisions should never be made under pressure.
2. Always request written information be mailed to you about the product, service, investment or charity and the organization or company offering it.

For legitimate firms, this shouldn't be a problem. Swindlers, however, may not want to give you time for adequate consideration, may not have written material available, or may not want to risk a run-in with legal or regulatory authorities by putting fraudulent statements in writing.

You should insist on having enough time to study any information provided before being contacted again or agreeing to meet with anyone in person. Some high-pressure telephone sales calls are solely for the purpose of persuading you to meet with an even higher-pressure sales person in your home!

3. Don't make any investment or purchase you don't fully understand.

Unless you fully understand what you will be buying or investing in, you can be badly burned. Swindlers intentionally seek out individuals who don't know what they are doing! They often attempt to flatter prospects into thinking they are making an informed decision.
4. Ask what state or federal agencies the firm is regulated by and is required to be registered with.

If you get an answer to this, ask for a phone number or address that you can use to contact the agency and verify the answer yourself. If the firm says it's not subject to any regulation, you may want to increase your level of caution accordingly.

5. Check out the company or organization.

If you assume a firm wouldn't provide you with information, references, or regulatory contacts unless the information was accurate and reliable, that's precisely what swindlers want you to assume. They know that most people never bother to follow through. Most victims of fraud contact a regulatory agency after they've lost their money. It is far better to make the contact and obtain whatever information is available while you still have your money.

6. If an investment or major purchase is involved, request that information also be sent to your accountant, financial advisor, banker, or attorney for evaluation and an opinion.

Swindlers don't want you to seek a second opinion. Their reluctance or evasiveness could be your tip-off.

7. Ask what recourse you would have if you make a purchase and aren't satisfied.

If there's a guarantee or refund provision, it's best to have it in writing and be satisfied that the business will stand behind its guarantee before you make a final financial commitment.

8. Beware of testimonials that you may have no way of checking out.

They may involve nothing more than someone being paid a fee to speak well of a product or service.
9. Don't provide personal financial information over the phone unless you are absolutely certain the caller has a bona fide need to know.

That goes especially for your credit card numbers and bank account information. The only time you should give anyone your credit card number is if you've decided to make a purchase and want to charge it. If someone says they'll send a bill later but they need your credit card number in the meantime, be cautious and be certain you're dealing with a reputable company.

10. If necessary, hang up.

If you're simply not interested, if you become subject to high-pressure sales tactics, if you can't obtain the information you want or get evasive answers, or if you hear your own better judgment whispering that you may be making a serious mistake, just say good-bye.

Commission Junction (CJ) has grown over the last year to be one of the largest affiliate program networks. They boast over 1700 merchants at the time of this review, and are adding new merchants on literally a daily basis. There are a variety of reasons why CJ has been able to grow so quickly.

First, they offer very competitive pricing for their merchants, compared to competing networks like BeFree and LinkShare. This has allowed CJ to not only sign up some big-name web properties, but also attract dozens of more smaller, more targeted, niche merchants. Second, CJ has continuously improved their own affiliate program to provide more benefits to affiliates, and encourage them to help grow the CJ network. It CJ's own affiliate program that we will look at for the purpose of this review, however we will also touch on many aspects of CJ that carry over to all of their merchant partners.

Program Details:
The foundation of the CJ affiliate program is their two-tier commission plan. What this means is that as an affiliate, you are able to earn commissions in two ways for referring new webmasters to the CJ network. First, if the person you refer goes on to join CJ (either to promote CJ directly or one of thousands of merchants), you will earn a $2 up-front referral bounty.

Second, thereafter, for as long as that person remains a CJ affiliate member, you will earn 5% of the commissions they generate for themselves. It should be noted that the referral bounty and 5% residual commissions are only applicable for new affiliates that you refer to CJ. If they were already CJ members, you will not earn these commissions.

As an example, let's say 40 people clicked through from your web site. Then, if 10 of them signed up to be a CJ affiliate, you would earn $20 in referral bounties. Lastly, if those 10 affiliates went on to be active and generate $50 each in commissions each month, you would receive $25 in second-tier commissions on a monthly basis. Although this might be a slightly optimistic example, you can see the power of the CJ program. Since they have attracted many smaller merchants, many of them are highly targeted, focusing on a particular niche. This is very useful if your site is also very targeted, since it will increase the likelihood of finding a merchant that is appropriate for your audience. Programs in CJ also range across all types of affiliate commission models, including pay-per-click, pay-per-lead and pay-per-sale.
Visitor Feedback:
So, what kind of feedback has been received about CJ? From a merchant's point of view, I have only received excellent feedback, and from numerous sources. CJ offers a well-designed, well-implemented solution at a reasonable price.

From an affiliates point of view, I have received slightly more mixed feedback. Earlier in CJ's history there were some reports of missed commissions or suspected inaccurate tracking. However, a quick look at my email archives doesn't show a complaint in the last 9 months, so it can be assumed that CJ has ironed out any possible problems they have had.

I have in the last 9 months received several pieces of good feedback, including many reports that CJ always pays on time and accurately. With a poor payment record generally being the major source of complaints for any affiliate program, I am confident in recommending CJ at this time.

How does Pay-Per-Lead work?

Over the last 6 months we have seen an increasing number of pay-per-lead programs vying for the attention of webmasters. The advantage that a pay-per-lead program offers is that visitors to your web site do not need to make any type of purchase for you to be able to earn a commission. As prevalent as e-commerce is becoming today, and even though a large portion of the Internet populace is now comfortable with shopping online, it is still, and will probably always be, easier to give something away then to sell something.

Let's take a look at a simple example, using some real data, but with program names changed to protect the innocent (and the guilty). Program A is pay-per-lead and pays $1 for each new user you refer to their free, downloadable software. Program B is pay-per-sale and pays about a $5 commission for a similar software product that costs $25.

An affiliate decides to promote both to see which results in higher overall commissions. After two months of testing, the affiliate referred 271 new users to Program A, earning him $271. He also referred 24 new users to Program B, earning him $120. The affiliate decided to stay with program A for obvious reasons.

Pay-per-lead programs are generally designed to promote some type of free service or product. I have also created a group on Facebook called “Follow Me On Twitter”. Whatever niche you belong to use Google to find if there is forums already created in that niche, If there is then join the forum to search for followers on Twitter.

But how is Google PageRank determined? Mainly, if your website has a good number of backlinks then you will have a high PR. Backlinks are links to your website from another site. Google consider each backlink as a vote from other webmasters to you. The more votes you have, the higher the PageRank you will receive.

In 2005, Google's head of webspam team Matt Cutts and Jason Shellen came up with the concept of NoFollow.

nofollow is an HTML attribute value used to instruct some search engines that a hyperlink should not influence the link target's ranking in the search engine's index. If they choose to place a DoFollow link to your site then you will receive their vote and that will improve your ranking. But if they use the NoFollow link then you will not receive any vote and your ranking will stay the same. Remember, it will not decrease your ranking but the backlink will simply not count.

Sometimes it is easy to manipulate Google PageRank. If you have a big budget then you can easily buy links on high PageRank websites and thus increase the chances of getting a good PageRank for your own website. Google does not like this and has been working hard to punish all those webmasters that sell and buy links by decreasing their websites' PageRank. Google does not have any problem with webmasters selling and buying links but Google asks them to use the NoFollow links when doing so in order to prevent PageRank manipulation.

Does that mean that you are not allowed to post DoFollow links on your websites? You are allowed but one thing that I find confusing is the process through which Google knows if a link is bought or not. How can Google tell if Webmsters are buying links or not?

NoDoFollow - A Firefox Extension To Distinguish DoFollow And NoFollow Links

Few weeks ago, I read about a very interesting and one of the most useful Firefox extensions called NoDoFollow on a website. After reading a short description, I decided to test it and see if it is really capable of doing that the developer claims. So what is this SEO tool that I am talking about? What does it do and how is it useful to us?

NoDoFollow is a simple 3 KB extension for Mozilla Firefox browser. The extension lets you know which links on a website are DoFollow and NoFollow. As most of you already know, the difference between DoFollow and NoFollow is very significant. Thus, sometimes it is very important for webmasters to know whether links on a blog or website are DoFollow or NoFollow.

How does it work?
The extension takes seconds to download and once downloaded you can easily use it. All you have to do after downloading is right click on any web page and then click on "NoDoFollow". Doing so will turn the extension on and all the links on the page will be highlited in either blue or pink color. The links in blue are DoFollow and the ones in red are NoFollow. Here is a screenshot to show you how it looks:

This small extansion is very useful to webmasters when they want to buy or exchange links. Buying a NoFollow link only provides you with traffic while a DoFollow link also helps improve your website's PageRank. Thus most webmasters check the attribute of the link before getting in any kind of deal.

Bloggers can also benefit from this tool as they can see which blogs have DoFollow attribute on and which blogs do not. Then, bloggers can comment on DoFollow blogs and leave their link to get some link juice.

3 Instant Traffic Techniques for Mini-Sites

When building websites there are two main options: large content site or small mini-sites. Large content sites normally focus more on providing "information". Mini-sites, however, normally have one purpose only, to sell.

Given what search engines want, large content sites are much better for getting search engine traffic. Most of the time (unless you're excellent at optimizing) it's hard to get mini-sites to rank well for competitive keywords.

This is why most do NOT rely on search engines for traffic to their mini-sites.

In all honesty, the best strategy is to combine the two types of sites by having a large content site to rank well with search engines that feeds traffic to your mini-sites.

However, not all of us have the time or know-how to easily build large sites that do well with search engines. Most of us just want to put up a small site and start making money.

Here are the 3 traffic generating techniques I use everyday for traffic to mini-sites.

#1: Forums/Discussion Boards

I have made more than $6,000 from one mini-site just by targeting it to the right forum in my signature file. All I did was leave a nice statement in my signature file; in 1 month I attracted over 5,000 targeted visitors that converted to over $6,000 for me.

The basic strategy here is that you need to find related forums and become active in them. Get yourself known, find out what those members talk about and find an affiliate product to fit their demand.

Then, make a nice, simple, yet captive site with a great headline followed by a review of the product. Test it and if it pulls well, you have a winner. If not, choose another product.

#2: E-zine Advertising

I would rate e-zine advertising at the second best way to gather traffic to your mini-sites only because this technique can cost some money. Forum promotions have no cost (typically). However, e-zine advertising can provide much better results.

Forum marketing requires you taking the time to make sensible responses or asking good questions. With e-zine advertising, however, you just write a good promotion and let the publisher send it out.

An advantage of e-zine advertising is that you know before you promote that you have a targeted audience that has already expressed an interest in your topic.

Also, the subscriber and the publisher most likely have a good relationship (considering the subscriber has not left) and so your promotion comes with credibility and may get more attention.

One of the keys to doing well with e-zine advertising (for me) has been repeated ads in the same e-zine. I have found that my results are best in the second of third promotion. However, if I get no results on my first mailing, I do not repeat that e-zine again.

Warning: Not all e-zines are the same. Some will be major winners and others will be major flops.

#3: Directory Sites

Alright, here is the controversial technique that I use very successfully. I know some of you will think that it is "wrong" - but in the end, my job is to teach you how I get my traffic; that is exactly what I am going to do.

Directory sites are sites created by software that automatically build you a site which is 500 or more pages. These sites are just simply uploaded to a domain name. Most (if done right) tend to do well with search engines. That traffic is then forwarded to your mini-sites.

As you can see, we're holding fast to our policy of building a funnel system where we use the large sites to bring in the "no cost" search engine traffic (which is also highly targeted). However, all the "selling" takes place on our mini-sites.

Obviously there are many more techniques to use to attract traffic to your mini-sites such as banners, pay per click, link exchanging, etc... I just wanted to discuss the top 3 that are the easiest to implement and require the least learning curve (in my opinion).

Keywords in Alt Tags:
Every html picture “img” tag should contain an ALT tag with an appropriate description. Keywords should always be used when appropriate.

Keywords in Anchor Tags:
Every html hypertext link “a href “ should contain a TITLE tag with an appropriate description. Keywords should always be used when appropriate.

Robots.txt file:
Make sure there is a robots.txt file in you web site directory. This is a text file created by the webmaster, which will guide the search engine´s crawler when indexing a web site.

There are some cases in which one might not want to have some web pages indexed. This way thru the use of robots.txt, one will have control over which pages will be indexed and made available to the search engines.

Disallow: /tmp/

HTML code validation:
Search engine’s crawlers become more efficient when indexing web pages with no html errors. Beware that some html errors can make search engine crawlers to give up indexing web pages. So it is recommended for those web pages to be indexed, there should be no html errors.

Links:
Links are very important to search engines. The quality of links and whether it is reciprocal or not, are important factors in evaluating the importance of a web page. Links from web sites with higher page ranks are a plus.

Registering with Directories and Search Engines:
It is very important the registration of a website with directories and search engine web sites. It is a way of telling the world that your web site exists. Avoid using automatic search engine/directory registration.

Cost Per Action or CPA (sometimes known as Pay Per Action or PPA) is an online advertising pricing model, where the advertiser pays for each specified action (a purchase, a form submission, and so on) linked to the advertisement.

Many newbies who have participated in the Google Adsense programs or planning to sign up thought that they could buy traffic from different sources in the hope that this way could help increase their impressions and clicks. But, they are wrong as this way is violating Google Adsense rules and policies.
